Guest Rob Posted October 2, 2010 Share Posted October 2, 2010 So, i've been stuck with dialup for the past 10 years or so. So, recently, I found out that I can get Netscape in my area. But, I can't find out how fast it is. The website claims to be 19x faster then dialup, but I don't know how many mb/s that would be. Can someone help me out? But it assumes dial-up is a 56k connection * 19 = approximately 500 kbps. So yeah, you're looking at a good increase but not that much. There's a lot of "under-service" so I'm getting 100kbps on a plan that's supposed to be 130 Mbps. Don't generalize all Canada's connection because of yours. It might be the same for my parents, where they do not get the connection they pay for, but for me and all my friends we have a stable connection at the speed advertised by the plan. You still only get 56k from them all, no exceptions. They "simulate" faster speeds by compressing data, meaning less to send. This won't work on things that are already compressed like music or videos. Actually, Canada's internet is mediocre. There are a decent amount of places that offer 100/100Mbps, but they are few and far between in the Canada/USA area. May I ask what ISP you use? Although I took a look at the plan I'm on and it's actually 3 Mbps. I don't know why I thought 130. :oops: At any rate, I'm not getting what I pay for, and I'm not alone. I can't find the article at the moment, but anyway what it was saying is that Canadian internet is suprisingly bad in that many fast, low latency connections are offered but often they don't quite to live up to what's offered compared to many other developed countries. Doomster Posted October 3, 2010 Share Posted October 3, 2010 Sounds like a rebrand of "Onspeed" - http://www.onspeed.com/ Accelerated dialup is basically adding quality-degrading image compression and a few other tweaks - mostly snake-oil.You can get up to 4:1 compression on the text parts already, usiing a 56k modem's built-in compression. Might be worth trying http://www.opera.com/browser/ - with "Opera Turbo"http://www.opera.com/browser/turbo/ - And they are being honest, about 2x faster is a more achievable goal - and not bad for a free browser! Trying to remember the tweaks I ran on dialup, I tuned the MTU optimization and RWIN, made sure the modem was set to use high speed serial, and I seem to recall using some moidem comm and tweaks to lock the upstream to max 28.8, as that often allowed better downstream than 33.6 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
