Spells to consider are slayer dart (cheap and effective), fire wave, I don't really reccommend surges because they are very expensive and don't hit that much extra. For mage slaying, consider this setup: Ahrim's top, Ahrim's skirt, arcane stream necklace, arcane spirit shield, staff of light, infinity boots, seer's ring (i), full slayer helmet, barrows gloves, mage arena cape. You can also use a mage's book or unholy book (depending on prayer needs) or a soul wars cape (again depending on prayer needs). I'd say fire surge > fire wave > magic dart. I mostly agree with this, and DEFINITELY get the arcane stream as soon as possible. It's a tremendous help. I would say surges > claws of guthix (with charge and a void mace) > waves. Can you use a wolpertinger? I wouldn't recommend mage slaying at all without one. You can use it to access higher level spells, too, and the scrolls are so cheap that it wouldn't be a big deal to just re-scroll every two minutes. I would also highly recommend that you get soul split, otherwise healing is going to be an issue on a lot of tasks. I mage slayed from 86-97 magic, so I have a lot of experience with it. It's really not for the faint of heart. It's expensive and definitely not worth it if you don't have an arc necklace, wolper, soul split, and SoL/void mace. The most efficient thing to do would be to wait till 93 slayer, then just get your mage experience from ice wyrms tasks, but I personally mage-slayed because I wanted a change of pace, so I understand.
