Back after a long break

I started playing RuneScape in 2003, when I was a junior in high school. I played a regularly for a few years, but when I had my first child in 2008 I quit. I logged on every once in a while but didn't have time to play much. I am back after a long break. What major changes have taken place? Anything I need to know? Thanks!

My combat level is 92

Really you want us to summarise SEVEN YEARS of updates?

Given that on average 4 updates a month for 7 years tht is 48 updates a year aka 336 game updates for 7 years.

Basically its not the game you once played treat it as if it were a new game you never played before.

edit: I realised I totally mis-read the original psot on the dates DOH

Eh there have been some major changes in combat. Firstly you will notice that all damage has been multiplied by 10, and all health as well.

Secondly, more powerful weapons, armour, potions and prayers have been added. I don't know what sort of hits would have been considered good in 2003/2007 (I'm guessing 300/400?), but now a fairly regular max is over 600.

Along with better combat boosts players can now camp a monster for hours on end, depending on the monster of course. The God Wars Dungeon features 4 level 500+ bosses and Nex at level 1001. All but Nex can be killed 20 times in one go by one player.

Combat is currently the best moneymaker, ranging from the fairly accessable frost dragons at 2m gp/hr to high-level Nexing at 10m/hr profit.

That's to illustrate the difference between a 2003/2007 player and a 2011 player combat wise. Skill wise, xp rates have improved, mainly.

Note: not sure what exact updates occured, but they follow the above path.

thanks! the best weapon I have is a whip (which I know is not very good.) What are some better options?

Whips are still the norm, but more and more players are using the Chaotic Rapier, which is a reward from the Dungeoneering skill (which IMO is an annoying ass skill to train). The Chaotic Rapier led to the crash of Godswords. Armadyl Godswords are 50M (the highest price), and Bandos Godswords are 10M (lowest price).

There was a new request released as part of the Void Knight storyline called the Void Stares Back. It's reward is the Korasi Sword, which has a special that is excellent for PKing, and the Sword itself is basically between a Dragon Scimitar and Whip in terms of stats. Its special has a 100% chance of hitting, costs 60% of the spec bar, and can often hit well over 300 (I've seen people regularly hit 500-600 with the special if they wore good gear).

There were changes to the Prayer skill. After doing the latest Zaros quest (Frozen Fortress), you unlock a new prayer set (working like a separate spell book almost) called Curses. The highest level curse is unlocked at level 95 Prayer and is considerably powerful than the standard Prayer book.

Likewise, there are extreme herblore potions and special restore potions, which have revolutionized boss hunting.

The While Guthix Sleeps quest unlocked Tormented Demons, which are arguably one of the best money-makers in the game. They drop a weapon called Dragon Claws, which is an amazing spec weapon. One special attack costs 50% of the spec bar and does four quick hits (like the Dragon Dagger), which are extremely accurate. You can easily take half of someone's health down even if they are wearing good armor.

Our Disney overlords are very generous.

Dunno if you ever kept track/cared about highscores, but aside from the previous mentioned changes, there are well over a thousand players that have maxed total level, so Zezima is no longer "the legend".

It's more of an xp race now, and seeing as xp rates are increasing fairly well over time, you should have an easier time leveling up your skills.

hmm, major updates.

truth is, getting all of them in one post cant be done.

lets start with the big ones.

new skill: dungeonereing. max level is 120 (not 99!)

whenever people say "cls" it means "chaotic longsword".

"cr" means "chaotic rapiure" and is basicly a whip on stereoids.

new boss monster: nex (although at 92 combat, i dont even think you can get to her, let alone kill her) btw shes level 1001.

i would put more but i have to gtg.
