March 6, 201115 yr Ok, so my old computer's motherboard was fried (I assume by a virus, since it was throwing pop ups at me prior to its death). I recently bought a computer off of my Uncle's friend, and it turns out that it had a bad hard drive. I would like to know if I can snap my infected hard drive in, System Restore and not have it fry my "new" computer. I am tight on cash at the given time, so any advice is appreciated. March 6, 201115 yr pop your old hard drive in your new computer. boot from a windows xp or windows 7 cd rom and format the disk. if your unfamiliar with the process then you can google it. Just format the drive with NTFS and you will be fine. dont waste your time on system restore as it doesnt work as intended to most of the time. Viruses can be tricky. Just because a virus has been active for a few days or weeks doesnt meet that the actual virus hasnt been on your machine for months now without you knowing about it. Viruses do weird things, such as sit in silence collecting information for lord knows how long until finaly its time to strike lol. your only option is to reformat. system restore might look like it worked. but i wouldnt count on it. formatting your hard drive and installing a fresh installation of windows will work for sure. no doubt about it. if ya need help just ask me.
March 6, 201115 yr Be sure to check if you have the installation disk or if you have one of those secondary partitions with the recovery portion in it. If you have the disk, just try what the posters said above; formatting the drive using the installation disk. If you have a recovery portion, you'll have to use an option on bootup to boot from that. Yes, those kind of recovery option is crap, but it's popular in a lot of factory-built PCs.

March 7, 201115 yr Just format it. Anyway it's not going to work, and if that windows still works, the activation key won't be active.
