Looking for some tips // Deadman's glory axe WIP pt2

Ok, first the few basic things:

Software used: C4D and Photoshop 7

This is one of my first (or second) actual atempts at making a 3D model. I've tried a long time ago, but never got the hang of it. Well, i've been trying again, hell, this model I started on a few months ago, made a WIP of it, and never did anything with it again :/. But, I've picked it up again determained to learn to model.

Right now my bigest problem is what kind of modeling should I do. I know of two types, box modeling, where you start with a simple object and morph it to what you will, or polygon modeling, where you basicly create the image out of polygons.

Right now, I use polygon modeling, because personaly I find it slightly easier, while it takes much longer I think. Now, the thing is sometimes my Things can get quite complicated, such as in this wireframe shows:

Anyways, i'm wondering for those who model out there, what method do you use? Right now this is working for me, although it is very long, and like i've said before, it gets confusing.

Now of course, for some parts on this I used other tools, for example the main part holding the two blades I put into Hypernurbs in C4D, to give it a softer sort of feel.

Anyways, I also am trying to get down the whole texturing deal. As you can see, the blades texture isn't the best. I tried to add some light to the top and bottom blade, since I had light sources on the top and bottom of the axe, in photoshop but the result only turned out so-so.

Anyways, any Help is apreciated, and you can comment on it as well.

Pretty neat. The right axe blade part though, it's shading is different from the other side. It's off in alot of places, and looks a little tacky.

Although, you might want the whole look of it being "used" so it's more "dirty."

I like your sig atm though. 8)

the blades look .. flat and not so sharp

perhpas to make it look sharp make a very sharp high light around the edges of the blade and make the rest of the blade darker.

and dirty would indeed be a good idea

good job tho

edit:btw this was the first post since reopening the media thingy's.

i am like so cool now

Try smoothing the axe blade edges down, you can see the straight lines and angles particularly on the grey edges which don't have any colour differences to hide them.

Yeah, I might redo the blades. I did them using poly-gon modeling, which of course gave me a few headaches to having to line up points perfectly. I can see the flatness, I figure a more reflective surface can fix that.

It appears to me that the blades have too few vertices. A few more will make them a bit more smooth areound the edges.

You already know about the material...try making a custom skin perhaps?

Nice job on the skin for the decorative part. I think it would look better with an atmosphere and rendered at a higher resolution, but I realize that that would take HOURS to render.

Nice job, keep them coming ^_^

Here are a few things I would do.

Are you modeling in Symmetry? You need to do that to make sure your model stays symmetrical, assuming that's what you are going for.

Do you have any pictures of this axe? If you posted up some reference I could show you ways to fix your geometry.

Overall not bad, typical newbie model.

I'm loosly (loosly) modeling off of this:

Go to blunts >> deadmans glory.

No, i'm not modeling in symetry. Last time I tried I think that the blades wern't that symetrical, i'll give it another go.

sounds good on the handle, i'll lower that up. Was just a plain cylander.

Overall, sounds good :). Thanks for the advice keiph.
