Slayer efficiency questions

Recommended Posts

I'm currently working towards my chaotic rapier, and after I get that I plan to finish maxing my melee stats with slayer.

Previously I didn't do much efficient slaying since I thought the cost of prayer potions was too high to be worth it, but they've gone down significantly so this seems like a good time to try it out and see what I think.

So, I have a big list of questions for you guys... any help is greatly appreciated!

1. Once I get the rapier, is my whip good for anything at all? I'll probably keep it for aesthetic purposes anyways, but I'm wondering if it will serve any practical use anymore.

2. What other melee weapons, if any, should I have? I doubt I'll be going for any more chaotics any time soon.

3. Using piety, about how many prayer potions should I bring per task? I'm sure I'll have to tweak it a little to get it just right, but I have never really used piety for anything before so I'm kind of clueless here.

4. I don't particularly understand how to use a cannon. I tried to use one once and it seemed like it was way more trouble than it was worth. Is it really that great for slayer? Should I get one? How many cannonballs do I bring with? If anyone could explain it a little I'd appreciate it, I really have no idea how to use it properly.

5. On tasks like abyssals/nechs that drop infernal ashes, is it worth banking them? I was planning on just using urns or scattering them so I don't have to spend all that time running back and forth, but if the profit is significant I'll do it.

6. I've always had black demons blocked, but I hear they are actually a pretty good task to do. Should I unblock them? If I do, where do I kill them, and what method do you recommend I use?

7. As far as familiars go, what should I be using? Right now I basically just bring a bunyip everywhere, except for tasks where a BoB is needed. I haven't really used combat familiars outside of dungeoneering, are they worth using for slayer when possible? I don't have soul split though, so I assume I should just stick with healing familiars.

8. Any speculation on the prices of prayer potions? Will they continue to drop, or bounce back up a little? Since I still have to get my rapier before I start slaying, I was considering buying a big stockpile of prayer pots now while the price is so low. Not sure if that would be a good idea or not?

And finally, here is my gear setup. Is there anything I should change or save up for? Currently saving for soul split, followed by turmoil and overloads. I do not wish to sell any of my armor to pay for pray/herb levels, so please do not suggest that.

1. no

2. one with crush for waterfiends, i use chaotic maul, another option is zammy spear, (i dont like gs's)

3.you wont need many, i cant remmeber exactly how many i used when i did it, but its not many at all per task, each task varies anyways

4. cannon is worth it 100% on every task possable, (if you can use it ofc) it speeds up kills by a fair amount (make sure you place it by spawn spots) bring around 3k c balls just to be sure, i never used more than that. its usualy 8 c balls per kill i think thats what i averaged at.

5.i got 99 slayer before infernal ashes ¬_¬, but imo i would use urns the banking etc, would make it highly annoying, (unless you have yak then just use yak to deposit 150 per hour) otherwise i would use urns,

6. black demons are my favourite task!!! kill them at taverly dungeon, with cannon and piety / turm and melee you can either prayer melee to be on safe side but all i ever did was high def armour and uni/buny that was enough, i think i killed 200+ easily in less than a hour = good xp, and there 3rd best charm dropper rate

7.bunyip for most tasks, and bob for some tasks when needed, only use unicorn on tasks where you get hit loads, so no need for like abby demons (like i always see people do it annoys me)

8. doesnt matter even if prayer potions rise again to liek 7k ea its still worth slaying with piety

1) I use my whip on dagganoth and abberant spectres. I do use my rapier on bloodveld, hellhounds and such. The cost is pretty high at multicombat tasks that use range attacks, and with cannon + familiar you're getting around 30% of your kills by melee - the small overall damage increase isn't worth the 10% rapier charge per task to me. Of course if you have many more tokens than you need, you should rapier those tasks.

2) If not maul (and cls for wyverns) then a Saradomin sword if you do waterfiends, and a staff of light if you do ice strykewyrms (when you get them).

3) In the gear you listed (+19 prayer) piety drains 60/147 points per second, which is 66 seconds per dose at 27 points per dose. Adding a protect prayer would increase your prayer use by half, or 44 seconds per dose. For most tasks, 10 pray pots should do just fine, 44 minutes worth plus the 83 points you have from your level.

4) You should cannon all tasks. The basic idea is that you put down a cannon in an area with a lot of spawns close to eachother. In single combat, closeness is preferred over lots of spawns provided you have enough spawns to keep busy. You should make sure large monsters are always positioned over the cannon. In multicombat, you want lots of spawns around the cannon. In short, you want to maximise cannonball usage while maintaining your highest primary weapon damage output (and familiar if applicable).

5) I'd say go with urns, it's really quite convenient. Banking is good with a yak only.

6) Yes, unblock them. Cannon them in Taverly dungeon, you can pray protect melee + piety wearing Bandos. There will be a lot of noobs/bots there, so if you can steal a demon just over half health, do it, but ignore demons under half health unless you can get the killing blow perhaps. These are 300 kills per hour picking up each charm and banking as many ashes as possible (and storing more in your yak).

7) You should use a bunyip on single combat tasks you don't need a bob on, or a unicorn if you need more healing (mithril dragons, wyverns and waterfiends if you do these). Get one level for a geyser titan and use that in multicombat. You can protect pray on hellhounds, mutated bloodveld and abberant spectres (practically required for the last two) so no need for healing there.

8) I'm not 100% sure either but it probably can't hurt to buy a lot of pray pots now.

A big part of efficient slaying is blocking and skipping the bad tasks - even cannon/turmoil/overload/steel titan can't turn warped tortoises into a good task. I recommend blocking jungle and desert strykewyrms and warped torts at least. Skip or block fire giants, dust devils, spiritual mages, gargoyles, LRC. You can check this for an effigy-focused task list. Since you still need a lot of charms, I would recommend doing wyverns and waterfiends. Blue dragons, nechs and abyssals are mediocre tasks but with a yak they can be some alright profit (and ranged xp in the case of nechs, which you need).

I wouldn't skip LRC, they are the best melee exp of any slayer task.

PM me in game anytime

It's a lot easier then that for an idiot to sound smart on the internet.

That's exactly what you're doing right now... just saying.

Considering Norriie's stats, she will max melees before getting 99 slayer. Ranged xp is much more relevant, as are effigies and charms. And if at all possible some collateral prayer xp wouldn't hurt either (ashes). All points where LRC don't exactly shine. They are some of the most annoying tasks to cannon, too.

Rapier is good for almost all tasks bar Waterfiends and Wyverns.

2. What other melee weapons, if any, should I have? I doubt I'll be going for any more chaotics any time soon. Chaotic Maul/SS/ZS for Waterfiends and CLS/Whip for Wyverns.

3. Using piety, about how many prayer potions should I bring per task? I'm sure I'll have to tweak it a little to get it just right, but I have never really used piety for anything before so I'm kind of clueless here. I would bring atleast 8 per task barring Terror Dogs (which you should skip IMO). Not entirely sure, but that is how many I bring.

Cannon is immensely useful for slayer as it increases your DPS by alot, so yes, get the Cannon. Use it near spawns if single combat or lure the spawns to the cannon in multicombat. Per task, I'd bring 2k cannonballs max.

5. On tasks like abyssals/nechs that drop infernal ashes, is it worth banking them? I was planning on just using urns or scattering them so I don't have to spend all that time running back and forth, but if the profit is significant I'll do it. For Black Demons, I can usually bank them with a War Tortoise; however, I would wait for a Yak before banking. The reason I use it is because I can't afford to cannon and need the $ since I got hacked.

6. I've always had black demons blocked, but I hear they are actually a pretty good task to do. Should I unblock them? If I do, where do I kill them, and what method do you recommend I use? Yes, do unblock them as they give great melee exp. Cannon them in Taverly Dungeon urning the Ashes.

I would definitely use a combat familiar wherever possible. As long as you have an EE, on those tasks, it will be enough. On single combat tasks, use a healing familiar; and on some tasks where the monster's 100% drop is great $.

8. Any speculation on the prices of prayer potions? Will they continue to drop, or bounce back up a little? Since I still have to get my rapier before I start slaying, I was considering buying a big stockpile of prayer pots now while the price is so low. Not sure if that would be a good idea or not? They will remain the same price so long as Sorc Garden bots are alive, so yes, stock up on a 100 or so of them.

And finally, here is my gear setup. Is there anything I should change or save up for? Currently saving for soul split, followed by turmoil and overloads. I do not wish to sell any of my armor to pay for pray/herb levels, so please do not suggest that.

Really? Cause as I recall it was you who was the one cussing me at base. Also, re-read what you just said: one 15 second delay (which is an exaggeration to begin with) ruins floor times? You are beyond ridiculous.
