Lag

I'm thinking Computer, but would like someone who's a little more computer savvy to answer.

My RS runs at (based on displayfps)

FPS: 5-11, 6 being the norm

MEM: 60,000k - 120,000k

IN: 100-600B/s (usually 100-200) OUT: usually 15-40 B/s

OFFHEAP: 0k

CACHE: 100%

My internet connection is:

0.96Mb/s DL, 0.17MB/s UL, ~660ms ping

And my computer is a POS 6yr old laptop

(If you must know it runs on an Intel Core Duo CPU, 1.73GHz, 2GB RAM)

Reason why I think its the computer is that if the IN/OUT refer to data transfer between runescape and me it should be more than sufficient. And when running RS java takes up a significant amount of the CPU's resources.

So...based on this information, would a new (up-to-date) computer reduce my lag?

We will need to know what operating system you are using, as well as the graphics card to make it easier to give a good answer.

Vista Home Premium, 32bit

As for the GPU its an integrated GMA 950

Based on that I can't be running Vista? :o Funny because its the OS that came with the laptop.

Anyhow, if you need any other info just let me know.

Well, I had a computer with similar specs and RS did lag a bit on higher details, but it didn't lag that much when I switched it to lower detail modes.

I still think it's more your internet.

Well, to me it looks like your internet. 660 ping is just dreadful. Did you try any other worlds?

Its not the worlds, those numbers were off of a speedtest.

I know with this connection (damn satellite) I'll always have some lag, I'm mainly wondering if a newer/better computer will reduce the lag. Its nearly always a 2 second lag, spikes to 5-10 seconds once in a while, drops to 0.5-1 second rarely.

Well, it will improve it, but not a vast amount. I do have to admit, your CPU speed was a lot slower than mine was, so that might be a factor... If you were going to get a new computer, then you'd might as well do it.

I'm not really a fan of Vista, so yeah.

And just remember RuneScape always uses a large percentage of your CPU, no matter what kind of computer you use, so that's nothing to worry about.

Overall though, I still think it's your internet.

Was 660 ping from the closest host on speedtest? Because that could be the cause of your lag.

Thanks for the help Killerred.

I'm not a fan of Vista either. Regretted getting a laptop with it, just didn't want to fork over some money for a different OS a couple months after buying it

Yeah it was from the closest. As I mentioned in passing, due to rural location, I'm forced to use satellite internet (barrett xplorenet  ). Guess I'll get a new computer, still suffer from awful lag (though hopefully a little better), and hope to find a job in a more central location.

Yep, the ping is killing you. Hope it will get better for you.

And who said you couldn't run Vista on those specs? Vista is a good OS but you have bad specs for it.

I'm running the exact same processor, ram and I think graphics card and I can manage around 20FPS in medium settings so it's pretty safe to say it's your net. No need to upgrade your computer unless you really want to.

Another thing to look at is 3G USB modem. I also live in a rural area and if you've got 3G coverage I think it may be better than satellite internet.

Why can't the Big Bang be done by the hand of God?

It could have, but it is next to impossible because it also could have been caused by the flying spaghetti monster, or one of the other infinite number of deity possibilities.
