Windows Scheduled Automated Login

I am looking for a way to login to a Windows desktop machine on a daily basis. I want to do this as a scheduled task.

I have got her set up to shut down automatically every night.

The BIOS has an option to boot the system every day at a certain time.

All I need now is a way to automate the login to Windows.

This is primarily to record TV shows that would air while I am away / asleep.

I could just leave the system up, running & logged in 24/7, but that seems rather inelegant.

in a word:

No.

Windows cant run stuff til it is logged on.

Bios can't do it.

Also it'd be a stupid security flaw if you could do it.

It is possible to do it. It still requires to setup a password for security on windows 7.

I know it is possible simply because I have setup my parent's computer to login automatically onto Windows 7. UAC still works and stuff.

Once we know which version of Windows we can tell how to do it.

my bad then, sounds stupid still though; why bother with a pass if the system is gonna log itself on anyway?

Security. Not everyone has more people living with them, but things that usually need a password will still need them, UAC included if there are more than one user account.

True but once its logged on a load of you're personal data is easily accessed and anything that still asks for a password is much easier to bypass using cmd and a few simple hacks.

Plus there's the chance after an automated log on a virus can set in to work unnoticed if it was sent by a hacker who is aware of your automated log on.

And if you computer did get stolen all they have to do is wait for it to log itself on then they have a much easier job of stripping personal data from it.

And if there is only 1 user account that auto log on has just opened up absolutely everything.

Just sounds like an epic security disaster imo.

Follow this; just click on "Turn on automatic logon in Windows XP", and run the file.

I would suggest changing your windows password first, if you use the same one for other things.

Thanks for digging.

I am not sure I want to turn that on though. I don't want to remove the login - I just want to be able to schedule a login from time to time.

I would want the system to boot at 06:00 every day (done; through BIOS).

I would want to be able to schedule a log-in for a low-leveled account, record a TV show, and then log off. This might happen two or three times a day: login, record, log off.

At the end of the day's recording, I would want to schedule a shutdown (done; through Control Panel --> Scheduled Tasks)

I have found a commercial product that seems to do what I want, but I would rather just do it through Windows itself. It seems more and more likely that I won't be able to though.

I’m starting to think I should just build a simple system with a tuner card solely to do my TV recording, and then let it run 24/7.

It's not that bad to leave the computer on all the time, my myth box (I'm assuming you are using myth to record...) just stays on all the time. Throw it on there (mythbuntu if you want some more options) and let it go. Never needs to shut off, even to do updates.

I am using the Windows app that came with the card - FusionHDTV. The scheduler runs as a tray app and launches the main app when needed to record a program. I can load the schedule by clicking on programming in TitanTV's online guide.

Doesn't Windows have support for running scheduled tasks while not logged in?

I believe it does, set to run at system start up instead of after log on. How To Schedule Tasks in Windows XP

I completely missed the part about scheduling tasks before login.

I will try to schedule my TV scheduler to start before login and see if that works.

EDIT - I scheduled the tray app to start upon boot, added a show to its schedule for testing and then rebooted. When I logged in an hour later, my show had recorded without any account being logged in.

Thanks for all the input and help.
