New RS player: Where should I start?

Hello all,

Just started playing RS. I am an MMO veteran so Im not completely helpless when it comes to the genre. I do have to say it seems like there is a lot to do in RS and I really have no idea on what my focus should be right now. All Ive been doing is working through the easy tasks and the novice quests. Also, I upgraded my account to P2P(gamecard) which I belatedly discovered a lot of people recomnend you dont do. So anything I can do to take max advantage of my member status would be much appreciated as well. I know this is a little open-ended and a lot of it depends on me; I'm just looking for some of you more experienced players to toss me some ideas and also let me know if there are things that are considered "must-do" stuff for any new character. Thanks for the help in advance.

(: enjoy the game. Personally I reccommend going through the tasks that jagex has provided for beginners. this will introduce you to most of the skills that are available to you as well as introducing you to new areas. I really reccommend NOT going p2p until about combat level 50- this game can be overwhelming without worrying about all of the p2p content. Familiarize yourself with the f2p world first.

Combat is always a good way to start if you don't wish to do the tasks. Start killing things and pick up what they drop to be sold later, this can be used to raise your other skills.

Alternatively, you may choose to pick one skill every day and learn how to train it a little bit. Barring members only skills, this should take you about 2 weeks to get through, at which point you'll be around level 20-30 in every skill. At this point you'll be able to choose accurately which skills/style of gameplay fit the way you want to play runescape. Furthermore, each new skill you train will introduce you to different kinds of players (specifically ones who enjoy doing that particular skill more than any other skill).

Hopefully this helped... You can send me a private message ingame if you need more help/advice. My usename is Mini spawn. I had someone help me right off the bat when I joined so I'll happily repay the favor.

Happy scaping!!

First off, let me say. Welcome to RS and if you have any questions in game feel free to add me, username: Buddha Life.

As a fairly general start, I would say start working all your skills to a certain goal. Feel free to ask me questions on how to train specific skills. =P

As you progress, do some quests. By being a member you have far more quests available to you than you would as a F2P (Free to Play) character.

That's really all I have to say right now, but feel free to ask me questions in game =D

Since it was too open-ended, lets try to close-end it a bit.

Do you like combat?

Yes - Versus monsters or other players (not advisable, but to each his own)?

No - Do you like collecting or making things?

At the end, you'd be doing one, several or all of these in RS - questing (involves all skills), minigames (involves all skills), monster hunting (slayer, bosses or just general camping), PVP (wilderness, staking, castlewar, etc), gathering (ores, logs, etc) and crafting (weapon, armor, jewelry, leather, etc).

You have a fair deal of MMO experience. Which MMOs? Can I assume those MMOs dont have the sheer volume of tradeskills (non-combat) that RS has, and were more combat oriented? If so, maybe explore familiar grounds like monster hunting before going into skilling. Higher combat level is rarely a bad thing.

The only must-have in RS I think is having the know-how and intuition to make money, money and mo' money. At least that's in my opinion...

I don't understand why you wouldn't go p2p straight away, much more enjoyable imo. So go ahead and take the advantages, which mainly are in high-level content however (member's skills such as herblore don't get good until the 80's most of the time. Agility is one exception, summoning another).

Doing all novice quests is a good idea imo. Other than that, you can deal with certain 'problems' such as not being able to run all the way from A to B or not being able to use a shortcut (train agility for that) or not being able to kill a certain monster (train combat, of course) and various other things that you want to do but can't. I don't think it's possible to tell you what the most beneficial thing for you would be right now, not until you have set yourself a goal. But since money makes the world go round, it's probably worth looking into farming and the Royal Trouble & Throne of Miscellania quests.

Get agility to 30+ as soon as you can, it makes running around a lot easier. Obviously you'll want to train Combat first, and get some decent armour so you don't get killed during your adventures. Magic is always good for teleports, and Fishing, Mining and Woodcutting are good skills to make money with to start.

Don't worry about dieing outside of the wilderness, 9/10 times you'll make it back to your gravestone in time to get all your items.
