Personally, I just use the polearm since I am primarily a melee fighter and can hit hard without need to resort to potions or turmoil since vyrewatch (and the trivial juvinate) are easy to destroy. I don't exactly know your stats or preferences to know what to definitely suggest. Hope this helps in a way.

September 5, 201114 yr Magic and melee max almost equally high; my max at 97 str (turm/ovl and such) was 974 off task, and Latin maxed in the high 900s with ice barrage as well. Melee is a tick faster and free to use though, so use that unless you need the xp. Of course barrage does hit multiple targets which makes it great for rushing ghast/snake/nail beast events.
