Finding out if an account name has been changed

Featured Replies

Dear fellow tip.it'ers.

I have a rather unusual question, but I can't seem to find an answer for it anywhere on Tip.it nor the almighty google.

As many of you, I've played RuneScape many many years ago. Upon taking my extensive break of a couple years (you never really quit, do you?) I've come to found out that not only I can't access my old account, it's vanished from the hiscores.

Now, at first I figured someone got a hold of it and got it wiped or banned somehow. No biggy, I found another (low levelled) account I could recover. Now I started thinking that it might be the case that whoever got a hold of my account, has changed the name. Bottomline:

Is there any way for me to find out if my old account still exists, possibly under a different name?

I've tried adding my old acc name to my friendslist but to no avail. I was hoping I'd get to see a 'formerly known as:' type of message. It just says the account is offline. (Username is, or was, "Angel Tsai")

Cheers!

(I'm assuming it doesn't, but if 'Tsai' rings a bell to anyone: I was part of the tip.it crew a long, long time ago. :-))

It is possible to change the Username that is displayed for Runescape accounts now, however it is not actually possible to change the username that is used to log in to the account as far as I know. I am pretty sure that there is no way to figure out what username the account is currently using as it is to some degree an extra security measure to not associate login names with display names. really the only way I can think of to tell if the account is still around would be to try the account recovery system and see if it has recovery questions set.

You certainly do ring a bell :P

Anyway, I checked my old accounts, unfortunately you're not showing up on either of my friends lists.

Yeah display name can change, but the username for logging in cannot.

So Angel Tsia is still there (presumably) to be logged into, just the display name might of been altered or w/e

Example: In-Game I am Sy Accursed, but my username is still Paw Claw, which is what I have to use to log in with.

Thanks for the swift replies!

Do you still need to log in with your original username after the several cooldown periods after changing your name?

And thanks for the tips! I'll see if I can recover the account. I'm sure I have earlier information than whatever the one that got on it has.

PS. Wow, Necromagus, you're still around! What has it been? Couple years? Haha..

Yes, you always have to login with the original username as the login system doesn't pay attention to display names.

Overall the Recovery system is a hit or miss affair with not entirely clear requirements of what it takes to get the account recovered.
