its alright for a first i guess. u need to shade, rather simp;le realy, just a few tones darker and lighter either side of the main colour. u need a background, not a white space and the lines on the glass need 2 be all going the same direction, unless they all have a different light source :?

I'm working on my first sig aswell :D , my suggestion would be to try some of the tuts..

well thanks for the tips heres where i am right now but i think i made the sheild too bright

Has he been watching to much TV? his eyes are square! But umm yeah, his hair doesn't look right to me... You need alot more shading and it doesn't get black arounf the shield, it stays grey.
