Ice Skating Help...

A brief background: Went ice skating today for the first time in a long time, with a few friends and a girl I like. Sounds like the perfect romantic setting huh? It would of been if i was able to actually remain balanced for more than a few metres and have a bit more confidence. The phrase "like a newborn baby deer on ice" springs to mind. I'm going again next week and really don't want the same to happen again, so i could do with some tips.

I've been on a few sites who have offered a few tips but they seem to be tailored to potential ice hockey players or figure skaters. Just basic stuff really, the correct foot action how to balance etc. would be much appreciated. :)

Hug the walls for a few minutes while you get used to it and you'll be zipping around in no time

Now stopping..... aim yourself at a wall/person and claim it was their fault ^.^

Yeah, after about 30 minutes of wall hugging you think i'd get it right? :P I might take some stabilizers or something...

As for the stopping bit, i don't know how the wall reacted to me blaming it all the time

If you keep falling, the girl that you like may think that it's cute

Hah yeah, I think i got a few sympathy faces from her for falling, it was my flailing arms terrifying small children that i think i need to work on :P

What, are you not terrifying enough children? 'Cause chicks dig that.

As I recall I'm pretty terrible at ice skating; it could have been the skates (knackered, the were) but I suspect it was me. If you're really very concerned, and want to be sure you're good at it before letting the person see you do it again, perhaps go on your own some time and practice?

It's probably a practice thing -- though, as with most things like this, some people can probably do it straight away.

Haha, no I meant I need to stop it, it just seems the natural way to balance to me. Not good though on a crowded ice rink. ;)

Thanks for the advice otherwise though, I think i'll just pray to God that i somehow gain a sense of balance on ice. :P

what kind of ice skates do you use? hockey skates, or racing skates?

i found it the easiest to do with racing skates, but a pair where your ankle is also in the shoe of it, to keep your skates straight.

anyways, good luck with the little children, try not to run one over, like i did......

The girls will love it if you can't skate. You are humbled and therefore accessible.

The only time I have been ice skating I could do it instantly, but that's because I could rollerblade beforehand. If you are absolutely adamant on being able to do it, get some cheap rollerblades and learn to skate.

As for stopping, you just drag one foot behind you so that the blade is perpendicular to the direction of travel.

Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.

well ice skating is actually alot easyier then you might think. ive been playing ice hockey for about 5 years, and believe me stopping and standing up isnt hard when people dont want to kill you. just try and find your balance and move your legs slowly. usually bending your legs helps that way you arent swining to and from. if you roller skate, ice skating will seem very easy your first time. when i made my switch form rolloer to ice, i found it was alot easyier then i thought. so maybe try and roller blade in your street and get the feel for the way moving on roller blades\ice skates feel. bending your legs really does help tho, when i go to cie rinks with my friends, people always stand strait up, and lose their balance very easyly. just take it as a new experience and try to find your balance, and you will be skating in no time. dont give up, and just remeber, others at the rink probally arent much better.

You see, I never learned how to stop. I'm like the kid off the Mighty Ducks, the Mexican one? Anyway, like him, bar the dribbling skills, the speed...the fact I can't play hockey...

Well I'm pretty quick but how do you actually stop normally, without flying over the waist high barriers?

I said, you drag one foot behind you with the blade perpendicular to the direction of travel.

Or jump and turn so both blades are perpendicular, and you lean away from the direction of travel. The blades will knock up ice dust, which is useful if you want to antagonise your enemies.

Dreaming of that face again

It's bright, and blue, and shimmering

Grinning wide

And comforting me with it's three warm and wild eyes

My favourite is the hockey player's stop;

The Hockey Stop

Perfected by hockey players, the hockey stop is best known for...yes, kicking up the most ice! The hockey stop not only allows for a quick stop, but also enables the skater to change direction and pick up speed rapidly following the stop. In either direction, the figure skater must use each blade in tandem, moving in the same direction. Keeping the skates parallel, the figure skater evenly distributes their weight while leading with the back of the blade outside the body. For example, if I wanted to perform a right hockey stop, I would refer to my right leg as the outside leg, my left being inside. Keeping my legs and skates parallel, I would slightly turn my upper body to the left, using my right hip and skate as the guide forward. As I start to rotate my body, I apply greater pressure on the back part of the figure skating blades which will allow for a sliding sideways stop.

Basically, as you're skating forward, turn your skates perpendicular to the direction you're going and lean backwards to the direction you were going. The result is alot of snow spraying up everywhere and a very very fast stop... and if you're learning, you tend to lean too much and fall back every time.

Never roller-bladed as a kid, always was out on my bike :(

I think i'll try the knee bending trick. Do I try and keep my weight forward or straight? My prefered method of stopping is either to go flying into the barrier or fall over. :P

Well if your question hasn't been answered I play hockey :D

Bend your knees so that they line up over your toes, only bend your back a little.

Try it now and then just push and glide and just stand up, heck even try walking on one the ice(with your skates) you dont need to push when you are first starting, just worry about your balance

Stopping = Easy

1. Fall

2. Crash

3. Keep going until the friction slows you down

4. Keep one skate going straight and turn the other one to a 45 degree angle and put a little wait on it.

Hope that helps, I don't always talk or think in a straight line

Isn't it lovely how having an opinion makes you hated around here?

My suggestion is to put on ice skates and stand on a non iced over area, such as carpet or tile and first learn to walk with your skates on. This helps improve your balance.

Once you learn to walk with the skates on, try walking with them on over the ice. It should come to you pretty quickly after that. :D This is how I learned to ice skate.

DO NOT walk on tile, it's 10 times worse than ice, and you'll smash your head harder.

I've been playing hockey for about 8 years now(since I was 7) so I know a thing or two. First I wouldn't suggest the hockey stop for just starting(the first year I played hockey I wasn't that great at it myself). Try the snow plow and see if it works for you, or what even I do most of the time, drag your toe(of the blade) along the ice just lightly(your toe should be on a 45). I wouldn't suggest the toe thing as it only slows you down a little and you need a fair sense of balance, but it's easier than the hockey stop(it looks kinda cool too).

As for your balance, first off what kinda of skates are you wearing? I think hockey skates gice better balance to be honest, and I'd suggest taking some clear hockey tape and taping it around your ankles(while it's in the skate, so that you tape the tongue of the skate tighter to your ankle giving you more stability). I've been doing this since novice and I'm pretty pro. I find it gives me a better sense of balance and stability, plus it give me more bounce in my strides. Also if your on an indoor rink I'd suggest making sure your skates are too sharp but aren't dull, and if on an outdoor rink(such as the canal in Ottawa, the longest rink in the world) then you probably won't notice if they're sharpened or not, but make sure they're not rusty  .

Another tip, bring a towel or old cloth with you to wipe the snow off your skate blades(or behind in your case) so that the blades don't rust.

Thanks for all the help guys, it's just an outdoor small cube rink that's up for a few months during the winter. I hired the skates they have there, looked pretty standard but i'm no expert so i don't know what type they were.

I think i've got quite a few ideas of what to do now, I should be able to stay up for a bit. :)

Well, i went today, just got back and had a great time! :D I got the hang of it really quickly this time, and sure i fell over a few times but mainly because of one friend who seemed to like pushing me over. And to be honest it was so much fun i couldn't care less. Heck, i even skated hand in hand with the girl i liked :)

Thanks for all the help.
