Combat Stats - Critical?

What does the "Critical" mean? What does it do? Can I get it any higher than this without a Scrimshaw of Strength?

Chance of landing a critical hit with an autoattack or ability.

How much better is a critical hit than a normal hit?

A critical hit made with an autoattack deals 25% more damage (even though Jagex states it's 50% more damage, tests don't appear to indicate that), while a critical hit made with an ability deals the ability's maximum damage.

The irony of crit hits, particularly on autoattacks is they often trigger on a cruddy hit so your like woo 600 crit hit when I just hit you for 800 for my last 3 attacks -.-

 

To add a bit more context when you see the big coloured numbers that is a crit hit. Orange for melee, blue for mage, green for range

You mean 75%-125% of your max? Because I think I've hit lower crits as Sy said.
