Warning: Slight spoiler in the description if you have never read Anne of Windy Poplars!

Seeing as it's almost Valentine's Day, I remembered reading a quote from Anne of Windy Poplars by L.M. Montgomery. Anne Shirley and her student Lewis Allen are running an errand at a local's home, carrying with them a picture Lewis had taken of a boy named Theodore "Little Fellow" Armstrong. Previously Anne and Lewis visited Theodore to ask his father, James Armstrong, if he would support the High School Dramatic Club. Mr. Armstrong snubs them and little Theodore comes out with his dog Carlo, offering Anne and Lewis a snack, thinking that they were asking for food. After a nice chat with Teddy, Anne asked if the boy would like to have his picture taken with Carlo to thank him for the snack. Teddy agrees and Lewis takes the image, promising to send the picture over as soon as it was developed.

While running the errand later on at the local's, it is to Anne and Lewis' shock to find out that Teddy, died of pneumonia. Mrs. Merrill, the local's brother-in-law's wife, says the following,

"I feel sorry for [Mr. Armstrong]. He's well-to-do but I've always felt he looked down on us because we were poor. But we have our boy . . . and it don't never matter how poor you are as long as you've got something to love."

The actual quote in the image is from Anne's paraphrasing of Mrs. Merrill's wise words.

Happy Valentine's Day.
