Best Single Combat Style in Dungeoneering?

What is the best combat style to use in Dungeoneering if I want to apply all of my equipped binds to one? I appreciate that someone might suggest that I take weapons from multiple styles with me at a one time, but that's not what I'm asking.

Does "best" combat style differ if I have access to Elite Dungeoneering Achievement Diary rewards? (Using 2 Ring of Kinship effects simultaneously.)

What 2 effects should I have equipped at once in that case?

This is just my guess but I'm thinking Celestial Hood/Top/Bottom/Celestial Catalytic Staff + T10 Blaster/Blitzer.

Magic seems preferable since, if you wish, you can switch between any of the 4 elemental spells using the same weapon, meaning you can take advantage of any specific Magic weakness.

My only other question would be, if the above setup is as good as I can do, should I substitute a Shadowsilk Hood instead of a Celestial Hood? It seems like most of the common things that Magic is weak to are fooled by the Hood (Ranged Zombies and Skeletons, Forgotten Rangers).

Of course I might be totally off-base with all of this and melee might be the best single style to use even with dual rings, so that's what I'm asking to begin with... :P

Well, I know, but it seems less useless if you're using it as a mage, since fighting the monsters that'll disable or see through it generally puts you at equal standing on the triangle (they're mostly mages) and the monsters that are fooled by it are the ones you're weak to.

SSB is also an actual Magic class item now, so it conforms with the style, although I don't know if head slot items even affect your accuracy or whatever.

Honestly, I haven't DGed properly in around 5 months but when I have done it occasionally now, I find that the damage I receive is hardly much at all so hiding from some enemies wasn't worth it. Teams also generally want the fastest floors possible so mainly DPS with a bit of defence. The setup that I use is P2h/Primal plate/Saggi longbow/Saggi body. The Saggi body is probably not worth it that much and so a blood necklace would be a good replacement.

I'm not too concerned with DGing properly, I just want to have the most powerful setup for a single style in DG. My friend tells me that Celestial Catalytic Wand/Orb are actually significantly better than Staff because of something strange about DW, so I might try those with Celestial Robe Top and Blood Necklace (although I don't have one yet). I know though that at least in Magic gear that the Ranged Zombies and Forgotten Rangers tend to take a big chunk out of me at times.

Personally I think melee is the strongest setup, don't really know why anyone goes for just 1 style as that's not really efficient imo but that's not the point like you've stated.

Yes a fair few things are weak to magic but at the same time they can be easily dispersed with melee, primal maul/ 2h have no problem ripping through the majority of things in dg... Forgotten Mages however are always a problem unless you have range from what I've seen, I haven't seen for myself but I'm pretty sure melee hits more on mages than magic does. :P

Melee has the worst rings of kinship, I'm pretty sure, because there's only accuracy boosts and tank rings (and you don't want to use tank). I think one reason people think melee hits better is that they always use Berserker, which boosts accuracy, versus magic's Blazer, which is straight damage.

Magic and ranged both have accuracy and damage boosts, and the small advantage of attacking at a distance. Magic has the advantage of Asphyxiate, ranged has Bombard.

Regardless of what style you're picking, you'll be in trouble fighting the skeletal trio, runebound behemoth and Kal'Ger. Sagittare is unfriendly to ranged.

Magic doesn't require an ammo bind, but since you're getting free runes from the smuggler anyway, that matters less now. The autocasting is a pain though.

Maybe Vulnerability is good? With a soul rune bind?

p.s. SSH is still good, better than celestial hood. And no, helmets don't affect accuracy.

Melee has Hurricane and Cleave, ranged has Bombard and Ricochet, magic has Chain and Tsunami. Discounting Tsunami, ranged and melee are pretty equal AoE-wise.

Yes, ssh redirects damage to teammates, but given that you mostly solo gds anyway, that's hardly an issue (besides, it's not exactly a problem to have everybody wear a hood). Bn is better, but there's no reason not to use both if you're set on one style only (ssh + bn + ccs + cele top). Of course in easy-mode dg you can get away with using only one piece of armour, so it doesn't really matter either way (for hard mode, definitely get a hood).

I'm definitely going to try to bind a bunch of Soul Runes after I can get the higher tiers of the DG diary done!

My friend told me there's a cross-game cap of level 90 on Magic damage, so perhaps Vulnerability will help compensate. Since we haven't really had the option of binding whatever rune we wanted previously, maybe it could become an entirely new staple :P

Magic has been changed too often, I don't know anymore :(.

This is the latest info I have on magic damage. It suggests that spell damage does scale up with weapon, but it doesn't say anything about a cap at 90. Testing in Dungeoneering, I see that Combust seems to have a minimum hit at 305 for celestial and 296 for gravecreeper (staves). The difference in damage according to the interface is 70 - that's not by any means guaranteed to be accurate or relevant, though.

  • 2 weeks later...

Vulnerability is rather effective and starting with cash it's easy to just make a handful of Chaos Runes without losing really any time at all! :) I think I have nearly 100 Soul Runes bound by now too - not really any chance of running out even on a large floor.

My only remaining question is this: How much does Blood Necklace actually help me if I'm maging? What's the 5.0 crit worth?

5% crit is around 2.5% dps, maybe less. It's not terribly useful, but the special effect is nice as well.
