Gang Sabre
I was looking through some old N64 games online. I am wondering; are emulaters illegal? If not, I want to start a thread.
Arceus
In real life that's a complicated legal question I'm not going to delve into, but as far as Tip.It Forums go I'm afraid you can't post them, sorry :(. Mentioning it in passing would be okay I guess, but don't encourage/suggest/link to anything along those lines. Nintendo explains it on their legal page here if you would like to read further. 1 "Fight for what you believe in, and believe in what you're fighting for." Major Dash
Yup. It is basically the same thing as illegally downloading music. “I had a feeling we weren’t coming back from this fight when it began.”“Do you have any regrets?”“I don’t. It seems surprising, I know, but I wouldn’t change a thing. This is how it was meant to be.”“Huh, you never really notice how lovely the day is until you realize you’ll never see it again.”“Mmmhmm.”
Boris5000
Well, by law, if you own a hard copy you are allowed to download a back-up onto your machine. But you must delete it after 24 hours... ... So as long as you own a hard copy... Luck be a Lady

That said, I'm not a legal expert by any means and forum rules are another thing entirely. I'm pretty much just running off of what I've seen other forums do. 1 I painted some stuff and put it on tumblr

Even if you do that though, in copying the data off the game cartridge you need software which (Nintendo at least claims) is illegal. So you would have to obtain the tools to make such a copy from Nintendo with their express permission. Are Game Copying Devices Illegal? Yes. Game copiers enable users to illegally copy video game software onto floppy disks, writeable compact disks or the hard drive of a personal computer. They enable the user to make, play and distribute illegal copies of video game software which violates Nintendo's copyrights and trademarks. These devices also allow for the uploading and downloading of ROMs to and from the Internet. Based upon the functions of these devices, they are illegal. P.S. I love how they include floppy disks in that description, as if. 2 "Fight for what you believe in, and believe in what you're fighting for." chenw
Your title and your post does not match at all lol. Rar and ISO files are not illegal by any means, as long as the content does not have copyright issues. Emulators on the other hand is a lot more subtle. You definitely might need an expert opinion on this, but as far as I am aware, the emulator program itself is not illegal, the ROM themselves are the shady areas. Big corporations tend to attack emulator programers as ROMs are useless without the said emulators, whereas there may be tons more ROM uploaders. 1 6,924th to 30 hunting, 13,394th to 30 summoning, 52,993rd to 30 DivinationKiln Record (Post-EoC): W 25 - L 0, 14 Uncut Onyx, 8 Jad hits received (Best record: Two in the same kiln)Obby set renewed post update #2: 0QBD drops: 21 crossbow parts, 3 Visages, 1 Kites, 2 KitsMax Port Score [2205] Achieved: 27th April 2013 (World 2nd) Farmyard Rampage ranking: 12th, 50,000 Kills. Gang Sabre
There are also RuneScape emulaters out there. Very interesting but the xp rate is always 5 or 6 times xp.
Major Dash
Private servers aren't really 'emulators' per se.
Poppet
Rars are just files that have been compressed to make them smaller in size. Exe installers can basically function the same way. They usually just do it via a patcher though. Isos don't imply they are of a trademarked work they're just what's on a cd just a matter of what's on it. Emulators aren't inherently illegal. They're blatanty meant to play illegal roms though. Not to say couldn't play a homebrew legal rom or w/e. Servers are inherently illegal as they use copyrighted material. A law got passed recently about private servers for abandoned ware though where it isn't exactly as illegal. Wasteful necro'ing ought to be even more illegal.
