Ya, but all these free anitviruses arn't as good as norton or others right?

It may not be the best stuff around but it's better than nothing. It's free so you really shouldn't complain. AVG is by far the best free Anti Virus around but it fails in comparison to Norton.

You should look into getting a firewall too. You can download Zone Alarm for free.

The problem with the gene pool is that there's no lifeguard.

As the top user-review on download.com for Norton Antivirus 2005 states: "It drains RAM like a whirlpool drains your bathtub."

When I used Norton (only because it came free with my computer) it had a bad habit of quarantining parts of my favourite programs. It also checked .txt and .log files for viruses (which is just plain daft, since anyone who knew what to paste in a logged MSN/IRC conversation could make Norton do a dance on your computer).

If you really want to pay for anti-virus for some reason then I beg you, for the sake of your own sanity and that of anyone else using your computer, don't go with Norton.

You can be sufficiently protected with free software, so there is no need to pay.

I always wondered what spec pc's these ppl running NAV05 are using to say it lags. Because I have Norton AV and its fine. I think ppl just havnt got in configured right because my PC doesnt lag at all. Bashing Norton seems to be a bit of a bandwagon if you ask me.

The computer I had was, for the time, excellent.

I haven't used Norton for a couple of years, perhaps it's gotten better, but the fact that Norton's firewall currently disconnects it's users from IRC channels whenever someone says a certain word hardly instills great confidence.

Perhaps false positives are the price of "good protection", but it's protection I have done fine without with for the past two+ years, so I won't recommend people spend $40 on it.

For a start you are confusing Norton internet security with norton anti virus. Two different programs. Norton AV does NOT lag, slow down or drain ram. I have used NAV on dozens of computers and NEVER come accross any symptoms like the ones people describe

Thank you for your concern, but I never said they were the same program. I already stated issues with Norton Antivirus's false positives, I was merely stating that the state of their firewall didn't inspire me to purchase their products again. It shows that they are continuing to add rules to their programs that not only prevent something from working locally but are remotable 'exploitable' (even if it's just an annoyance). This is not a quality I look for when purchasing software.

Plenty of people do have the symptoms, regardless of whether or not you have personally experienced them, and even if they didn't I wouldn't recommend spending $40 on it.

Edit: Actually, I got bored and went on a Google spree. Seems the firewall problem was fixed recently, even if it was around for 2 years with noone lame enough to exploit it noticing.
