My IP address changes...

Boogie

Recommended Posts

I've just noticed that my IP address changes everytime I start up my computer. This is a problem for me because I need one IP address to remain. Why is it changing?

My ISP is SBC Yahoo! DSL. Should I contact them?

Thanks.

Do you have a router? If so, you're probably looking at your internal IP. Try a simple yet effective solution like http://www.whatismyip.com to check your external IP (the IP the internet at large can use).

If you don't have one, or already knew what I was telling you and you /are/ talking about your external IP, then there's not much you can do. If whatever you need this IP address for also accepts hostnames, you could look into using http://www.dyndns.org to keep a hostname referring to your changing IP address.

There is a lot that he can do... Dyndns is a good solution but it also means running yet another service on your computer so really it isn't the ideal solution... Personally, I'd ring up your isp and ask for a static ip, it will cost you a bit more (~ $10 / month) but there are many advantages to having one.

There are also disadvantages to having one such as people blasting you off the internet with a DoS attack.

I like my dynamic ip address apart from when the person before me was running a server and I get flooded with connection attempts.

In the UK most ISP's will provide you with a static ip if you want for about a couple of quid extra a month. Try reading up on your ISP's website for it.

Merm, I've used Dyndns, never ran anything on my computer. I guess that's probably because my ip is static anyway :P.

Hrm. My excuse for not thinking of that is (a) being a student who doesn't have money to spare, and (B) I'd never heard of ISPs doing that. Maybe it's a Dutch thing that they don't, but most IPs here are static anyway...

If you need a static IP, call SBC and get the static IP package (this'll cost you a bit more). Your IP should change every time you log on if you bought the dynamic IP package. :)
