Well, I'm considering taking one of my junk boxes and converting it to Linux. I've already managed to figure out that I'd like to use either Ubuntu, SUSE, or Knoppix. I'm not the most tech-savvie person, so I was wondering if someone could tell me the following:

 

 

 

1) Which distro (Knoppix, SUSE, or Ubuntu) would be best for me

 

2) What are some main differences and similarities between Windows and these three distros

 

3) Where can I download them (to be burned onto a CD)

 

4) What else should I know about Linux

1. Knoppix since it's a live cd. This way you can try it before you install linux to your system. Then if you like Linux you can install one of your other choices. Either one is good. I do not recomend using Knoppix for a main OS since it's slow because it's running from a cd/dvd.

 

 

 

2. A couple main differences are that if your a gamer you will not be able to play most of your games. Linux is more secure than Windows because less people target it for attacks.

 

 

 

3. http://www.distrowatch.com is an excelent site for finding the right distro for you. It also gives you links to download the distro and what is the latest version.

 

 

 

4. Linux does take some getting use to, but I do enjoy it. I find windows is more user friendly. If you deside on a distro that installs to the hard drive dual boot linux and windows so you can always swich back.

I'm thinking of using Linux as the main OS for at least one of my computers; if not Knoppix, which distro should I use?

 

 

 

And, are there any distros that would allow me to play my games?

For a main os, I would reccomend Ubuntu. I use it on my Linux computer, and it works great. If you really want to play games, and dont mind paying, I have heard Cedega works well. It allows you to play Windows games on Linux. I does cost money, but it may be worth it.

i reccomend SUSE im using it right now and it plays runescape fine

 

althought hwo junkie is this comp you are gonna use?

 

because these are all fairly new distros and need lots of hard drive space and at least 256mb of RAM

 

you can get SUSE for free

 

i believe you can download it or you can mail order the disks for a 10$ shipping cost

 

i borrowed it from a friend and installed it so ill try to ask him where he ordered it

 

the great thing about linux is its free and you can insatll it on as many comps as you want

 

unlike windows were its 200+$ an dyou have to buy a new copy for every comp or microsoft will sue your pants off!

Ubuntu is generally the most newbie friendly and you can order the discs in the mail for free

 

 

 

You really can't play games on Linux without Cedega or Wine as already mentioned.
