darkblade986
Dear tip.it users! During regular maintenance of our forum server on May 16th, and after further inspection, tip.it staff discovered a successful hacking attack on forum.tip.it. Tip.it is a very popular and highly ranked fan site. It has over half a million visitors, and nearly one hundred thousand registered forum users. Apparently there are also many jealous prying eyes. In the past, the tip.it community has been targeted numerous times by hackers. Tip.it constantly takes great care on security, availability and overall quality of the fan site. We however, despite all efforts, cannot guarantee 100% safety, as no site that is connected to the outside world can. As a precaution and user protection, it was decided to keep the forums closed for 24 hours to restore it's integrity and it's security. Contrary to our advice and numerous warnings, some of the users had the same username and password combination on both sites. As we noted that primary targets might have been Runescape accounts, we contacted and informed Jagex with the relevant information, so they could act the way they saw best. Tip.it, together with Jagex, are now further investigating the scope and severity of the last hacking, that unfortunately proved to be by far the most serious attack to date. Some of the 100000 registered username/password combinations were successfully stolen during the course of the attack. "Some" still means several thousand accounts. We have seen claims that our user database was stolen. This, however, is not correct. The database itself was never targeted and it's security and integrity remained uncompromised at all times. In the tip.it database, there are personal profile information together with username and encrypted passwords. None of this important information was revealed to the hacker. At this time we cannot reveal any more details regarding the breach, since we are now investigating based upon logs, what exactly happened and who did this. Since the scope and severity of this attack goes beyond simple "play", we are determined to find the culprit and regarding his or her location to bring them to justice. We ask our users to accept our sincere apology for these problems, but we also ask for understanding that we have done (always have, always will) all in our power to protect our users, and to give us credit for what we do on a daily basis maintaining and keeping this very popular fan site alive. We thank you for your continung support, and look forward to many more years of enjoying the Tip.it community. Truthfully yours, Tip.it Admin team, On Internet, May, 16-18, 2006 What's this about? Y2g2003
If you had read the post you copied and pasted... you would have known what happened. I think that article explains things pretty well. And I'm interested as to what the results of their investigation will provide. Don't wanna comment on the situation too much, but I look at it this way... at least they addressed the problem already and weren't careless by letting people visit a vunerable forum (at that time). The facts are a bit unclear with regards to what went wrong, so thats all I'll bother to comment on. R.I.P Shiva

darkblade986
I know about the locking, I have been affected by this anyways. I just took this off the main page though, and i'm a bit confused by it. don't worry, you are going to "hell" anyway. wanna race to see who gets there first?Officially reached 100 Combat at 1:33PM EST, June 14, 2007First Dragon Drop: Dragon Chain (Dust Devils) @ 10:48PM EST, July 14, 2008, lv113 combat
Y2g2003
Nothing in that article that was said is the least bit confusing... The forums were compromised during routine maintainence... the forums have since been restored after 24 hours of down time... and you're to change your passwords on tip.it and probably on runescape (if they were the same, when they shouldn't of been to begin with). Whats so hard to understand about that??? R.I.P Shiva
