Buying the right RAM

Ok.. well, my computer definitly isn't so great so I was considiring buying some more ram (only have 256).

I downloaded a program and it told me that the best ram I should buy is at 133MHZ =\. I was on the stapels website, pretty much the only place I can buy at around here. Can't buy of Newegg because they don't ship outside US, or at least not at a great price.

Anyways, on the staples site, 512MB ram costs $90, all except the 133MHZ one which is 133MHZ, it costs $160. Little too out of my range. But, there is however stick of 256 which is $80.

So, to sum it up, should I buy 256MB ram at the proper speed, or 512MB ram @233MHz, which of the two would perform better for me. As if there wasn't a $10 price gap (not too woried about $10).

Thanx for any help. And, if it's of any need, my computer is a Compaq Evo D500 (the tower, not desktop version).

According to crucial.com memory selector, it is PC133 SDRAM - now an obsolescent format.

Anything faster than 133 will be DDR memory, using a different interface altogether.

Never heard of 233MHz RAM... SDRAM came in 66/100/133 (PC66/PC100/PC133) - 168 pin DIMM format

DDR comes in 200/266/333/400 (PC1600/PC2100/PC2700/PC3200) - there are other higher but unofficial speeds. 184 pin DIMM format

Check the descriptions further, if the "233" has the same description in number of contacts (pins) as the PC133, then it may be a misprint bargain.

as far as i rember from the last 2 classes at my school you can use a faster with a slower one but it will only run at the slower speed trying to run it at the higher speed will burn the memery and again the ddr may not be compatible with your motherbord and curent memery

you could buy the faster one but it would run slow, or the right one and it would still be slow. I think. Don't sue me.

P.S. Try Tigerdirect :P

What I usually do for people who need RAM is use the aforementioned Crucial tool then buy the same spec stuff from a generic manufacturer off of Newegg. It always saves me and/or them a bundle!
