Old School Newbie - What have I missed?

Recommended Posts

I played Runescape (the free version) for several months a few years back. Recently I decided to give it another try. I find my self as a fairly high level guy decked out in rune armour and weapons, but with no clue what I'm doing anymore. I am considering paying for access to the full game, but wanted to get back into the swing of the game before I commit.

One of the first things I noticed is the free world seems to have shrank. Is this true, or am I just remembering it wrong?

There used to be a large PvP section to the east of the map. I have fond memories of going out there to mine and finding my first Runescape PK. Does this type of PvP wilderness spot still exist on the free side of Runescape?

What other things big changes have been made in the last year or two that I would most want to know about?

Thanks,

-Maugan

Well most level 55+ own a set of rune armour. The autoing problem has increased in the woodcutting area, but from what I have heard has almost gone in runecrafting.

The prices of rares, such as santa hats and party hats has dramitically increased.

More people are getting to level 99 in every stat and challenging Zezima.

You are considered a noob if you aren't level 126 by low level characters.

Oh yea also JagEx went through a phase when they seemed to be banning people for breathing, but that seems to have passed now.

o.0 So much has changed I don't know where to start.

First of all the wilderness is in the north of the map (And always has been, since it was introduced, I thought). Just keep going North and you can't miss it. ;)

I don't think the map has grown smaller.... :?

(Although my PC just broke so i'm not too sure when i'll be online next :()

Thanks for the info, guys. (Not that I don't want others to post more. I like info.)

I'm pretty darn sure there used to be wilderness to the east (and i think also to the north for pay-only back then). The old map I had for runescape had wilderness stretching to the east in an expanse almost as large as the non-wild map. I'm sure the full map is now much larger, but the new free-play map I'm looking at just seems so much... less. With all the graphic changes though, maybe I'm just not reading it with the right perspective.

more and more pures owning the wild *sigh*

By this do you mean characters who only learn 'warrior' combat skills and no spells? I remember this being one of my biggest frustrations towards the end of my previous run. I practiced some spells and prayers that are next to useless just to see how the system worked, and suddenly I can't PK at all because my combat level went up 10 points while my actual in-game 'real power' remained the same. I had sort of expected this would have become less of a problem by now, particularly when I read above that so many have all skills maxed. Is it still the case that with a character who has 57th level combat power and 20 points in prayer/magic will typicaly get owned in the wilderness?

Yea he means people who mainly train strength, or defence. And then there is the pure mages who are pretty formidable in the wilderness. There are also pure rangers aswell who just train ranged.

:) Your terminoligy reminds me of D&D. That's a good thing. ;)

I wouldn't say you'd get completely owned. It depends upon your gear if your impure. Go with full rune and pot up and you should be able to foil pures. Pures from around combat level 60-80 aren't so powerfull these days, full runers can take them out.

Your mage shouldn't be a problem. At your level you can probably get it to about 70 without effecting your combat.

Prayer? If it's only 20 I don't think it's an issue really. Most pures either don't train it or get it to 25/34 for the relevent prayers. I'd recommend getting 25 prayer for protect item.

At the end of the day, Just play the game. :) Try out the wilderness, If you get owned you can alway's run away. One of the changes was the removal of the 'Three Hit Rounds' from old shool 'scape.

Give it a go.

Lol, so many bad things. :P

Well, jagex is fixing things up. Recently, they got a new server, so it will help decrease lag and allows sound to be played on low detail. A month or two ago, jagex made it so that there are different kinds of esses. One that can only be use by members, and one that can be used anywhere. Well, everyone wants to pure ess (members only) because it allows access to all the runes, while basic ess only allows the 6 basic runes... That made the ess economy die. Now all the autoers are heading to cut trees and mine rocks.

There are also alot of new runescape players now. The word has spread and many worlds/servers have been added.

Well, there's a lot of new quests, but if i told you everything, then i'd be sitting here forever and ever. Check out runescape's update page.
