June 1, 200620 yr Author Also, will i need to upgrade monitors, i dont really need a new one. i have a CRT right now i dont know whats its called but the connection at the end is colored blue, and is a serial type plug in thing.
June 1, 200620 yr Case: it depends what you want. Do you want an aluminium one which is lighter? Do you want lots of room for expansion? This would probably be the last thing to choose; just get the best one you can for the money that is left over. As for the heatsink, some ones currently held in high regard are... Tuniq Tower Thermaltake Big Typhoon (though I have something against Tt) Thermalright SI-120 (different company) Scythe Ninja As far as I'm aware they all take 120mm fans on them. Sound card: do you really need one? Most motherboards come with at least onboard 5.1 sound. With the speakers that you have mentioned they are more likely to be the limiting factor. The monitor: you'll be able to use your old monitor. That older monitor will have a 15-pin (I think it is, I haven't checked) VGA connector but the new graphics card will have a DVI connector - almost all cards come with a DVI-VGA adaptor and if it doesn't they're easy to find. I'm currently using a card which has dual DVI output and 2 adaptors to 2 VGA connector monitors. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.
June 1, 200620 yr Author alright. sounds good... but can you find me a good motherboard that supports my processor, and 4x512mn DDR, the ones ive seen have gotten horrid reviews. and maby have it also have onboard 5.1? then ill look for the heat sync
June 1, 200620 yr I don't really know about intel boards I'm afraid. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.
June 1, 200620 yr It's a bit stupid to say they are outdated seeing as at any one time there is only ONE graphics card that isn't. Perhaps it just fitted his budget... Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.
June 1, 200620 yr The only performance difference between the 7800 and the 7900 is that the 7900 has slightly higher clock frequencies (barely noticeable). The best part about the 7900, though, is the more efficient design that uses slightly less power and produces less heat. The 7900's use around 278m transistors while the older 7800 uses around 302m. I concur about the sound card - don't even bother. Most good motherboards come with 8 channels (meaning 7.1) and having a sound card will just mean more heat for you to deal with. As for the memory, why not go for DDR2? Intel has had DDR2 as the standard for their LGA775 processors for a while and you will probably see the best performance if you go with DDR2. I looked up some LGA775 motherboards that have support for DDR memory and they are looking a bit dated. I would suggest picking out some good DDR2 memory. Edit: None of them even have the Pentium Ds listed as supported, I highly suggest going with a DDR2 set-up. 136 Combat, 2290+ Skill Total

June 1, 200620 yr Everything looks good. I fear you may not be able to get the 7800GT though, since nVidia stopped producing them after they came out with the 7900s (they are cheaper for them to make due to the lower transistor count). 136 Combat, 2290+ Skill Total
June 1, 200620 yr Author got a reccomendation for a good video card? edit: thats just as good, or better than that 7800GT? and for under $300 USA
June 1, 200620 yr The 7900GTs are the replacement for the 7800GTs. They are nearly identical except for some higher frequencies and the lower trasistor count. They are pretty much the same in price.. In fact, you can probably get a 7900 for cheaper than that 7800 you picked out. Just look at these, I would suggest an eVGA, ive never had any problems with their products. XFX is pretty good too. 136 Combat, 2290+ Skill Total

June 5, 200620 yr You would be much better off just buying 2 1 Gig sticks of ram. Also you really DONT need to that extra fan, if you do both of those that'll probably save you an extra hundred bucks. If you plan to do gaming on the computer then I HIGHLY suggest an AMD processor. AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 1GHz HT 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail - $154.00 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103535 thats a nice processor thats AMD, it isnt compatable with your motherboard tho so I picked out one for you just incase you go with that processor. ASUS A8N-E Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail - $93.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131530 also you will need to pick new ram sticks, the compatable ram must be DDR 400 (PC 3200) CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model TWINX2048-3200C2PRO - Retail - $257.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145587 thats 2 gigs of ram, its CORSAIR so you know its good, its 184 pin so its compatable with the other two. its also cheaper than your other ram and probably better, altho kingston is a great brand. [EDIT] Also here is a really nice video card if you are still looking for a video card. SAPPHIRE 100189 Radeon X1900GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail - $269.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814102020 Its SAPPHIRE, Radeon, under your price for the other video card, 256 memory size and interface, clock at 1200MHz, ATI, perfect :-D
June 5, 200620 yr Author i dont plan on gaming :P much anyway... maby a little here an there but this comp is going to be alot for video editing, 3d rendering, photoshopping and stuff like that the fans I WILL need, if you seen the tight spot i have to put this in then you'd agree.
June 6, 200620 yr I think you have a great bunch of parts there, and the more fans you get the better, overheating is a problem when doing cpu intensive tasks not to mention you say you put it in a tight space, which means you will need even more equipment to cool your pc. I would also highly reccomend buying the latest version of Roxio, for it's ''Drag to Disc' Software because it allows you to delete and add things with control you usually don't get from a disc, so if you mess up or find something wrong with what your putting on the dvd/cd you can delete it and start over without losing a dvd. Doesn't really matter how many fans you have if it's in a tight spot, since you'll just be circulating dirt buildup and warm air Details on this "tight spot" would be best I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.
June 6, 200620 yr Author a desk with a closeable door, behind its cut out so it can circulate air i guess, and currently from the back of my tower, to the wall is about 8 inches. from left to right, cleance is about 3 in. top to bottom is about 11in. -12in.
June 10, 200620 yr AMD > Intel for Gaming. Fact, not opinion or fan boy comment, been proven so many times. And if you do get fans, get them with dust filters, to avoid the dust. Then clean them every so often. ;) I'd recommend if you want to stay up-to-date, get a ATI X1900GT someone posted previously, get a Skt940 (the new, latest AMD DDR2 compatible) motherboard, then get a AMD Skt940 cpu/processor if you want to stay up-to-date with Mobos and CPUs for a while, and Graphics Cards. Btw, if you do decide to go Skt940, make sure the RAM you buy are DDR2 modules. Good RAM brands are companys such as: Kingston Mushkin Crucial Corsair OCZ

Skt940 = no im getting Pentium D, thats means i need 775.
