They give bonusses and it works as shield; Horror from the deep quest. 4 pages, not 5. Zammy book (Red) gives +8 all attack, Sara book (white) gives +8 to all defence, Guthix book (green) gives +4 to all attack and defence. All prayer books grant +5 to prayer and they do not boost strength. Last time I checked zammy pages were 200-350k a piece, sara pages were 100k a piece and guthix pages were 30-60k a piece. And note that you can only have 1 incomplete prayer book at one time. Once you complete your book you can buy another god's book from the guy in the lighthouse for 5k. It's very helpful to have around. Strictly not the best, but the better one is horrifically expensive, like in the region of 5m. It's called Mage's Book, Magic Training Arena Reward and gives +15 magic attack and defence bonus.
