Cruiser
Intel Pentium 4 Socket 478 2.8 Ghz Prescott Core Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 768 MB DDR RAM (No Name RAM) 19" CRT and 15" LCD Running in nView 2x40 GB HDDS. Processor: Still decent for use today even tho most new stuff blows it away. Graphics: Definately need something new if you plan on playing any new games. Nvidia 6 series cards are still available in AGP for decent prices if you look around. A few 7 series cards come in AGP but aren't really worth the price when you're buying AGP (which is being slowly phased out). RAM: Decent amount, upgrading to a name brand and 1gb would be a good idea. You can find name brand 1gb sets (1 stick or 2 512 sticks) for $100 and under now. The monitors don't need any comments. IDE hard drives are still very plentifull, and prices on drives overall are falling, so you may want to look into buying another if you're filling up your 2 40gb drives. wahoo
Yeah, if you are looking to buy any new games, you're gonna need to start from scratch, get a compy with conroe.

He doesn't need to start from scratch. That processor is still pretty descent. My suggestion is to upgrade the graphics card. I suggest a x1600pro, 7600GS(AGP), or a x850XT. You can also upgrade to a bigger hard drive. I'm guessing that hard drive is 5400RPM? If it is a 7200RPM would be alot faster. You can also upgrade to 1gb of ram but since you already have 768mb it might not make too much of a difference.
fr41237
Actually one HDD is an WD Caviar 7200 RPM. The other one is a spare that I had laying around (along with RAM). Could my Brother's PC be good enough for most new games? Thanks. AMD Sempron 3200+ w/64 bit Nvidia GeForce 6200 512 MB DDR RAM (Also No-Name Ram) 1x80 GB HDD (SATA, I'm so Jealous)
Diminished2b
If you scrap the vid. card and buy atleast a 6600GT and buy another stick of 512mb you'll probably be able to play Doom 3 on (Ultra) high. (Your brother)

If you want to upgrade this get another 512mb stick of ram and upgrade the graphics card. Even if he upgraded to a gig of ram and a 6600GT he could not play on Ultra quality. I can't even play on ultra with my x850XT.
Diminished2b
I got 40-45fps on Doom 3, ultra high, 1024x768 on a 6600GT (Old revision even, OpenGL 1.5 and 128mb of VRAM). with 1GB of RAM. I now get a bit higher with 2gb of RAM, I recently upgraded.
Sinkhan
The processor is still pretty good, but you might want to go for something with HT and maybe dual core (unless the P4 you have now has HT.) Or go AMD :D For the Vid card, go all out and skip the Radeon X1600 for the X1900. RAM, get maybe 1-2 GB RAM. Kingston is a good company. Get a 160 GB hard drive with SATA2 (there might be SATA3 now :-k ) at 7200 RPM (Western Digital good company for hard drives Something to fill my sig with until I find a replacement. Also check out my blug

The video card you suggested is great, but people have bugets and that thing is expensive. If you can aford the price tag I reccomend this card. If not I would get the 1600XT or 7600GT if you have PCI-E slot. Check and see if you have a AGP or PCI-E slot for graphics.

That was my experience- I got a Chaintech AGP nVidia 6600 LE for $92 total on newegg. I don't intend on playing any of the particularly recent and graphics-intensive games except WoW (and then I'd only be doing the trial)-- and then I'd have to upgrade to 1Gb at least (can't afford much more).
