axeraider70
phpBB3 is in it's BETA stage right now, but it comes with a lot of nice features (the feature list makes up for the fact that there are no MOD's available for it at the moment). You can find the featurelist Here. Anyway, upon its final release, would TIF consider switching over? I know this would cause some problems such as users not being familiar with Olympus (phpBB3) settings and config, but maybe set up a test board or something? It would certainly get rid of the many inactive accounts... too bad you can't just back up your database then transfer it into the new forum... Just a thought. axeraider70.deviantART.com
saidada1189
I don't think so. Albosky has made inumerable modifications to the code and is used to it and knows the location of certain code. It would be a great hassle. Also, the question must be asked as to why we would want to switch over anyway. Your post leaves this question unanswered. Also, why force the users to resignup and waste a hell of a lot of bandwidth? Shouldn't we make the current version better? The answer is YES. This code works great and we are all used to it. Conclusion: This is an all across the board horrible idea....end of story -sai
____
Since pbpBB3 is technically the next version up from 2.x, it'll happen eventually. Most of the fixes that Albosky has implemented are in the next build anyways.

I'm sure that phpBB wouldn't simply say "Now you have to trash your old boards and convert to phpBB3", but i guess why it's the BETA release. The final probably won't be available until later this year though. axeraider70.deviantART.com

The final probably won't be available until later this year though. Even if phpBB did say that, they can't enforce it. They would have to tell literally thousands of boards to upgrade, and even then, those boards are free to do what they what with it because of the license phpBB is released under. Even with the phpBB3 release, there will be a complete upgrade path between 2 and 3 so everything is converted over to the new system. Mods made by The Almighty Albosky won't get carried over automatically, but the DB will be converted to whatever new system they've developed. Vape
As Cruiser says, you won't have to re-register or any of that. In the final release (and probably for some of the later betas, so it can be tested,) they'll provide an upgrade path. I reckon you're best upgrading after the first 2 or 3 security/stability releases (not before, as only so may people will test the betas and release candidates, and this is a BIG forum) (not after either, phpbb3 is going to be far more awesome than 2, and eventually they'll stop maintaining the 2.x branch and people will discover vulnerabilities (every piece of software more complex than hello world has vulnerabilities) and yeah, very unwise to use.) Advantages/reasons for upgrading: http://area51.phpbb.com/docs/features.html I can see plenty of great things in there :) Where the bloody hell are you? Albosky
Eventually , yes , Tip.it will most likely migrate to phpBB3 upon a "gold" release. As stated above , alot of the MODs and fixes I have implemented are already available within Olympus , yes some may need a few some adjustments to suit our needs but thats always expected. http://area51.phpbb.com/docs/features.html I have been watching olympus' progress closely for quite some time as I am usually active on phpBB's support forums and am pretty familiar with the system already, although I personally believe the permissions system is a complete cluster(you know the rest). And yes , they do have plans to carry over database info into the new system and I would adjust it to carry over additional info that was needed . If a converter did not become available , then we wouldnt bother switching at all :) I like to fart silently but deadly in movie theatersArd Choille says (11:41 PM):I wouldn't dare tell you what to do m'dear
axeraider70
Yes, i don't like the way permissions are set up either, it's great that you can customize every little permission- but you have to set them all, and that becomes a pain. Well i've begun to dig a little bit into phpBB3's files and made some small modifications to it to make my phpBB3 test board look a little neater. Just trying to get used to the feel now- though it's hard to use phpBB2 again after coming back from phpBB3 :XD: You can view the test board here. axeraider70.deviantART.com
