DST settings

Recommended Posts

Is there any way that a Daylight Saving Setting could be enabled on these boards? As an event planner, I know that it is really very confusing when people haven't changed their profile to enable them to see posts in their own proper time. What I mean by this, is that when the country that people live in goes into or out of DST, most of them forget to change the timezone that they live in. Therefore they are constantly posting things like 'You say the event is an hour from your last post, but it is actually two hours', et cetera, et cetera, and it is generally very confusing and difficult to put them straight.

I don't know how feasable this would be, but it would definitely make thing easier to plan!

If people say 1hr from now, it's 1hr from now. No matter if DST is enabled or not.

The problem is when people say it'll be at 8pm CMT or whatever and dosn't post it in GMT or UTC which is generally easier to work with.

Thats not what I'm talking about, People who say '1 hour from the time of this post', and then people come along who haven't been following the thread closely, and see that message, but because their settings are not correct, it appears to them that that message was posted an hour ago, making the event start now.

Kidding right? You look at the post time of said post, and the time the forum says in it (on the index). They are ALWAYS correct - no matter the timezone or if you got DST enabled or not :uhh:

Inability to read is their own problem. If you know DST happens, either change it yourself or take it into account if you dont want to do anything the rectify the situation.

Are you actually against people making suggestions to improve the forum?

It is something that I feel would be useful if it were changed. You may not see the point in it, but I am guessing that you haven't answered literally hundreds of posts saying 'when is this'.

I agree with hobgoblin11... I have had to fight with this about a hundred times myself, and it is getting bloody annoying and wearing me out having to deal with stuff like this! :x

(Warning: This user can be VERY confusing to some people... And talks in 3rd person for the timebeing due to how insane they are... Sometimes even to themself.)

It doesnt matter what time zone you are on. "2 hours from the time of this post is still 2 hours" :-/

Rick, Merc, I have to disagree with you here.

If I'm a silly user and set my timezone to be correct right now, then after October the clocks go forward (in the southern hemisphere at least) and thus when it is 10am, the forum.tip.it frontpage will say "the time now is 9am" or something similar.. but because I'm a silly user I don't read that.. I go to the events board and see that "hello, there's a party on today.. and a gal posted at 8:30am that the party was an hour from that post... so that means that it'll be at 9:30.. so seeing as the time now is 10, I've probably missed it..." wheras in actual fact the gal only posted it half an hour ago, and it's still half an hour until the party.

So.. users need to know about how to manage their timezone.

I've not looked with any great detail into any daylight savings mods, but I daresay there's probably one out there to suit our needs. Users will still not understand how to use it or make mistakes or never configure it or whatever...

I've not had an extensive look at phpbb3, (and the test site is down atm) but I daresay it's probably got improved daylight savings time capabilities :)

In any case, the easiest solution for events is just to link to timeanddate.com

If someone says "2 hours from the time of this post" then it doesnt matter what time zone or what DST. Because whatever you have set in your profile will show the time it was posted according to your own time zone. If people dont have it set right in their profile then its their own fault for getting the times wrong.
