Linux

My friend, Zeekyhbomb, showed me a video on Linux. I was like "1337!" So, I was talking to my boss, and I brought up Linux. He said what he thought about it, and said if I wanted to, I should start out with Ubuntu. (Mods, if I give the link and it's against the rules, just delete it) The site is http://www.ubuntu.com. It's a like "begginer's" Linux, as my boss said. Anyone have comments on Linux, and if there's any better one's?

Sure...

Vector Linux and DSL are very good distros if all you have is a 400mhz computer chugging away with 64mb RAM :)

Vector Linux seems to me to have a better community supportwise, but it also has a more business like approach in the offered distros (not that it hurts them :) )

As for some more fun stuff like MythTV (a tivo type system) or Asterisk (the whole phone system thing where you can do the whole shebang like Press 1 for XXXX :P ), they have some specialized distros that pretty much come with only the stuff needed to run them. For MythTV there is KnoppMyth (although there is a muuuuuch better guide out there on how to run it with Fedora Core 4. For Asterisk, I really only remember one specialized distro, Trixbox.

Also, out of interest, what was this video(or the content of it)? If you give us enough information we may be able to show you how to do that, whatever it was. :P

FreeBSD isn't Linux, but it's another UNIX-like and I've ran it on a system with 12mb of RAM and it ran fairly good. There have been reports of using it on 4mb of RAM or so but it obviously runs sluggishly.

Great community, great stability, probably the best package manager (Many Linux distros have been trying to copy it [Gentoo, among others]).

http://www.freebsd.org/

Read the documentation and you should be fine.

Anyways, the video you were watching was probably XGL/AIGLX.

And to the lack of playable games, I've got 15+ games I play on Linux.

Wolfenstein 3d/Enemy Terrtiroy

True Combat: Elite

Tremulous

Quake 1-3 (& Countless mods)

Doom 1-2

Battle for Wesnoth

Any Java based (Runescape)

Planeshift

Eternal Lands

The Mana World (Heavy development)

Neverwinter Nights

etc.

Eh, I never really like XGL/AIGLX. Although, if you have a compatible video card then you can just spare yourself the trouble of setting up XGL and grab AIGLX (Comes with Xorg 7.1)..

For my main desktop I use Sourcemage GNU/Linux and nothing else.. Another one to check out.

OMG, I HATE XGL. It wan't it really bad, but it just will not work on my Gentoo box. I've had to update so many things and it still isn't working. I wish it did work though.

I also recommend Ubuntu for you first distro. It's Debian based, so I like it. It's easy to use, but it's also able to do advanced things.

The important rule is: linux is not windows

=> windows is made for money, it is usable by everybody for more profit

=> linux is for people who want to waste time with it, its not easy to administrate but it makes really fun :3>

Yes i use linux, 3x Debian [Woody, Sarge [ in use [webserver]], Etch], 1x Slackware [in use], 1x Gentoo [in use], 1x OpenSuse 10 on 3 boxes here ;)

If you dont like linux - nobody cares so just use another OS.

PS: XGL is such a stupid thing.. So windows-like .. Arr my fluxbox will run without it anyway \'

PPS: http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/ [ He said me gentoo/slackware -> just that what i use anyway so it couldn't be soo wrong ]

Kah Bah Gee!!
