Question for Tool junkies

Featured Replies

I was wondering what music the people who like Maynard's Tool and APC listen to, apart from of course Tool and APC. I've been trying to find bands that come close to the beauty of Tool, both lyrical and musical, but nothing in the same genre that I've found comes close to Tool, at all. There's some mildly entertaining music, like Machine Head or Rammstein, but they're plain metal, they don't offer anything more than rather good music.

I want to get that feeling where you get dragged away with the music and where you can sink into this endless hole on the rhytm of the singer's voice. The only kind of music that I know of that is more special than commercial, is post-rock. But of course post-rock is post-rock and Tool is something pretty different. So is there anything like Tool, or anything that comes close? Or is Tool a genre on itself?

There is nothing else like Tool. Sorry to disappoint.

Heh, a question I've seen on other fora as well. At first people thought they could easily name another 10 bands like TOOL. But after giving some links to my space they admitted it didn't come anywhere near and that they didn't know anything.

One of the bands that came up was openhand, so just my space . com /openhand you can hear some of their songs there. They're quite alright, but it doesn't have much to do with it really.

Other bands that came up, but in the end went down because it was all too different and not really comparable...30 seconds to mars, dredg, failure, oceansize.

Meh, you can check 'm out, you might like them. But none of the bands really do what tool does to me.

Failure is still very good btw. http://www. my space .com/failure

I've tried looking before, it really is hard to find music anything like Tool. But I suppose that's to be expected. You've got quite possibly the best drummer on the planet, a synaesthesic guitarist, a CRAZY bass player, and a ridiculously intelligent, and witty lyricist, not to mention an awesome singer.

I know Tool fanboys always love to hang from Maynard's nuts, but I don't care - I absolutely love that guy. The reason there's no other bands like Tool is because there's no other Maynards.

Are you saying there are people who claim to be Tool fans but dislike Maynard? That's like saying you're a devout Christian but hate Jesus.

The people that got me into Tool are bigger fans of Maynard than of the band itself. So am I, because what else is a band than a few individuals? And Maynard sticks out of course. And yeah, you're right that they have one of the best drummers ever; just check out Ticks & Leeches, it's amazing what that guy does with his drums.

edit: just checked out that Failure band; nothing more than one of the many high school punk/grunge bands IMHO.

They're bussy since the early ninetees. I thought they were quite okay. Nothing TOOL-ish though, I didn't recommend them as a 'something like', but someone else did, and I thought they were kind of cool, so figured I might as well post them. :P

Ah, I see why the guy posted them now. They toured with TOOL.

I might recomend the fantomas, but it depends on the qualities of tool you like.

Fantomas - if you like to hear another bizaar take on music, then i would pick up Suspended Animation or self titled (delirium cordatia is good too, but its an hour of effects). The songs are like tool in the fact that they basically are unlike anything, they really are one of a kind and hard to describe (other than "these guys dont follow the intro, verse1, chorus, verse2, chorus, outro" style). fantomas were with tool for lateralus tour.

I have often tried searching for other bands like Tool to no avail. I've simply come to the conclusion that there is nothing like Tool.

I'm bumping this old topic because I just got everything by A Perfect Circle and they are truly excellent! I thought they'd be a carbon copy of Tool, but so far they are taking everything that I like about Tool and putting it differently.

Absolutely, they're great. I love their cover of 'imagine' from Lennon. And they're quite different from Tool, only the thrilling voice of Maynard is the same, even though he uses it differently.

That's basically what I said to him earlier.

I just posted that so I could add that I went to see Tool (for the second time!) on Saturday. They were unbelievable. Wings For Marie/10,000 Days played in full, 'nuff said.

I don't like the Imagine cover.

I do like how Maynard uses his voice. I think it suits the soft singing.
