Nootropics

Does anyone on this forum take any form of nootropics? Recently I found a forum about longevity and basic health improvements, and an interesting sub section was about nootropics. (yes, they are legal, by the way): http://www.imminst.org/forum/index.php?s=&act=SF&f=169

It's a wide category of general brain enhancements. Standard wikipedia article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nootropics (what would a thread be without a wikipedia link?)

The most common ones have been in use for a pretty long while, and all research points that the safe ones don't have any irregular side effects. Of nootropics falls under a broad category, but I'm mostly referring to the type people take in upper levels in college. A lot of people I know take adderrol, but it's illegal, addicting and taking it every day might not be that great for you. Nootropics are taken only in rare occasions where one might need any type of mental boost.

Basically they make your brain run more efficiently. Besides basic brain health improvements, they are used for these kinds of reasons:

* Abstract thinking

* Attention

* Attitude

* Brainstorming

* Cognition

* Cognitive science

* Creative thinking

* Critical thinking

* Curiosity

* Decision

* Decision making

* Eidetic memory

* Emotions and feelings

* Emotional intelligence

* Goals and goal setting

* Idea

* Imagination

* Intelligence

* Introspection

* Lateral thinking

* Learning

* Memory

* Memory-prediction framework

* Mental calculation

* Mind's eye

* Mindset

* Mood

* Motivation

* Perception

* Personality

* Picture thinking

* Problem shaping

* Problem solving

* Reason

* Recollection (recall)

* Self-reflection

* Thought

* Visual thinking

I haven't personally bought any yet, because my parents freak out over any type of pill, but from what posters on that forum say who take them often, they completely love them. It makes you more alert, a lot quicker mentally with conversations or tests or whatever, improves memory, and more of the things in the list above.

So what I'm wondering is if anyone else has tried taking these, what they've found from them, if they'd recommend them, or for people who haven't, what if anything you've heard about them.

That wikipedia page has only two sections describing what the drug does. The rest is taken up by a long list of drug names. Also, there are no citations in the explanation parts followed by a spammage full of them in the drug list parts. Looks like a pretty suspicious article. If you look in the discussion page people have been talking about the lack of citations. I wouldn't trust this one ...

I don't think I'd ever take any, I feel that I'm 'quick' enough without them :)

One thing I thought of upon seeing the general description for those was a story I read months ago (Manna) where at the end there were people choosing to immerse themselves in technology for all the advantage they could get and another large portion of the population was taking land offered to them and not using any technology in their daily lives. (It's a very good read too)

I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.

Then read the forum I linked to. That place isn't exactly an advertisement. You see people talking about them, people who use them, and how much they say it affects them.

On top of all the recent work stress that I have this week I just broke up with my live in gorlfriend of 1 year. I know that keeping busy is always a good thing and I am doing this but she consumes my mind and it is very difficult to continue to lead my life the way I need to live it. I am distracted at work and have crying bouts. All in all I am having a very hard time delaing with these feelings.

Last night I took a vlium and it seemed to help but when I woke up this morning the feelings returned.

Is valium the right choice in this situation? Xanax? I am fully aware that neither drug is the long term solution but I wouldlike to take somthing to help take the edge off so I can start to cope and deal with these problems.

Um...

Um...

And? The person is asking what people would recommend for her to do long-term wise. He's saying he's tried pills but knows that they're not a long term solution because you can get addicted to them and they're better to use only on rare occasions. I don't know about those, I'm assuming they're anti-anxiety. Read more about enhancements, not so much treatments.

he never really mentioned that, and it isn't really implied... kinda worries me, though, that the pills act as an antidepressant

i've had no experience with them, though, so I won't jump to conclusions

Well you can get addicted to any type of anti-anxiety pill if you start depending on it. That's why they're better for rare occasions where someone knows they're going to be facing a lot of stress beforehand. I'm assuming that's why he's looking for more of a long-term solution(but still asking for some type of pill suggestion, I know), probably some type of diet change, exercise regiment, meditation, etc.

They talk like your brain is a computer...."Boy my abstract thinking just isn't up to par! better pop in a new abstract card...." :wall:

You can't ever find a place that's nice and peaceful, because there isn't any. You may think there is, but once you get there, when you're not looking, somebody'll sneak up and write "(bleep) you" right under your nose. Try it sometime. I think, even, if I ever die, and they stick me in a cemetery, and I have a tombstone and all, it'll say "Holden Caulfield" on it, and then what year I was born and what year I died, and then right under that it'll say "(bleep) you."

Well of course. If you go to a circus and ask people what they think of clowns, what do you think the general consensus is going to be?

I guess I just prefer "naturally" improving my thinking abilities. You know, like sleeping well and learning.

My point is they work, based on how much they like them.

Of course every forum works like that. You're not going to see many runescape haters on this forum (save for off-topic maybe).

I'm not saying anything about sleeping well or learning either. Of course that's standard. I'm asking about enhancing beyond those initial things you do.
