how much do web accelerators help?

Fasterfox won't help you if you're on a dialup connections. It would most likely just slow you down because of it's prefetching feature and it trying to open multiple connections to the site you're browsing.

Google's web accelerator on the other hand can help out dialup users because it compresses images (you lose quality tho) before you try to download them. That means smaller file sizes and faster load times.

If you're already on cable/dsl, you don't need either of them.

it saved me 5.8 hours so far. it works wel when u loading a website contains bunch of pics. only works with DSL and cable tho. if u use dial up, it really don't make a big difference..

Really is only a marginal difference and the only things that will load faster are images and pages with lots of text. Dont expect videos and music to download faster and Runescape to have less lag.

If you often follow links, prefetching may work, if you rarely follow links, it's just a waste.

Eg. if you jump to about 10 sites from favourites, perhaps make a home page on your ISP with them as links - then prefetching should have them pulling in ready.

If you download simultaneously, if you share a connection on a router, then prefetching wastes capacity.

I tried Google web accelerator (prefetch disabled) when my ISP proxies (NTLWORLD, notorious for proxy troubles) were even worse than usual, but didn't notice any improvement, but did notice an incredible amount of "chatter" between its components in my firewall, enough to cause disk thrashing on the logfile. Dumped GWA pretty fast.

I think if you use GWA with Fasterfox, probably best to turn off enhanced prefetch in the fox, as they would probably be doubling up - other tunings could probably be used.
