By speed do you mean by their RPM or their cache etc..? Cuz they are both 7200RPM, it's just the caviar black have 32MB cache and 2processors which makes it faster...(Read around 115MB/sec, right now my drive read is around 77.8MB/sec). so you are saying the extra cache and processor won't be used..? or did you mean by the RPM of the drive..? Read and write speed will be at the lowest speed, so yes, there's going to be some processing power that's not used. That's why it's ideal to have similar hard drives, but not necessary. Hmm...but i thought JBOD is referring to when you combine multiple drives into one large logical volume...? But i'm not planning on doing that whatsoever...They will be running as completely independent drives(Each HD is divided into multiple partitions, like how i'm using my 2 HDs atm).. So I don't think the drive speed will be effected if they are running independently...? Since they are not RAM sticks.. I'm i wrong or did you read my question wrong..? Just want to make sure. Cuz it's not making a lot sense to me atm.. Thank you for clearing thing up for me Oh, I think I've read your question wrong then. I thought you were making a single logical drive out of them. Yeah, if you're using multiple partitions then files contained within the new drive will load faster than files within the old drive, so performance will vary on the program/file you're running. Ok, I got it. thank you for the help

Window 7 increases my cpu temperature
im1knight replied to superaymond's topic in Tech and Computers
same thing here, my laptop raised by about 10C by going to 64 bit windows 7 from XP 32bit as well. I guess 64 bit Os just use more CPU power compared to 32? lol -

The computer itself is a prebuild, however i have upgraded the PSU and graphics card for it already, so i don't think the PSU is going to be an issue. I'll try that tip when i get my hard drive.

oh cool. i'm asking this because i remembered when i plugged a western digital 400GB in to recovery data(the OS on that hard drive is messed up), my computer starts to respond real slowly etc..and the drive won't show up. But maybe that's just the drive's problem. If it is not the primary drive you are installing, I believe that you have to initialize and format the drive before it becomes usable. Though, I am not sure if you did this or not. Did you want to correct the problem you just mentioned, with the drive not being recognized? Oh, i will put the new drive as the primary drive this time for sure. When i was doing that i did not. ok, now i know what's wrong. By speed do you mean by their RPM or their cache etc..? Hi there, my hard drive is really running out of space, i currently have 2 360GB seagate hard drive, with only 8MB cache each, and cannot be put into a RAID 0.. <_< so althrough it's 7200RPM, it's really slow when loading stuff But my space is running out too, 720GB is just simply not enough to hold all my stuff. I'm thinking of adding another 1TB to it. So i looked and decided on a Western Digital 1TB. Which is the Western Digital Caviar Black. I heard it's fast and reliable. However my question is, can i put a western digital hard drive in with seagate ones without causing any problems? I cannot remove the original 720GB because then the storage would still not be enough.. Normally people just go for one brand only, but i heard seagate's 1TB hard drive got a lot of bad reviews...with crashes and firmware issues etc, and is not as fast and the Caviar Black... So..any ideas? Thanks!

let's see...i shut it off every night, turn it on when i wake up and leave it on for the day. So it's on for about 16-17 hours a day, and around 7-8 hours off. and my laptop, um...it's almost always in stand by, flip the cover when i use it, close when i'm not, and at night i put it in hibernate(Since i have to turn off my UPS, or the light on it will kill me). My laptop did not shut down or reboot for a long time now...

i don't really think so.... i guess prevent downloading stuff when you are playing is the only way.... since this is not a computer problem anyway...it's a connection problem. And connection cannot be improved unless you upgrade it.. or buy an expensive router with speedboost, like D link 655 one is a good one, boost up my cable speed by a lot, also cost $100. But i don't think it's gonna help that much in your case since your connection is amazingly slow...

I got this issue recently when i upgraded my Nvidia driver to the newest 190.38. For some reason, it just cannot remember my settings! It's weird, but it's true. After installing the driver, i realized that my core temp and QQ TM are not starting up with windows, so i checked in msconfig, and they just disappeared in the msconfig list! and i realized that their "Start up with windows" setting is also disabled. I was like ok, so i enabled them again, and made sure that they are in the msconfig setting as well, and restarted once again. But it's the same problem! They won't start up with windows, so i went into msconfig again, and apparently THEY ARE GONE AGAIN!!! And this is happening to every single software im adding after that driver installation... none of them would start up on boot....and their entry would not appear in msconfig at all....but i did install Core temp and QQ TM before the driver tho so...idk what the problem is... does anyone know how to fix this msconfig forgetting stuff issue? i mean this is really annoying.... EDIT: i even tried put msconfig at normal start up, where it load everything, but they still won't load up, as for some reason they just keep disappearing in the msconfig list...

Transfering stuff from my HP case to Antec 300...need help
im1knight replied to im1knight's topic in Tech and Computers
oh...DAMN! so that explains why i don't get any internet on my computer... (btw i managed to get power button working, even tho the power light is not, but no big deal... but how do i remove it and reconnect it? where is it connected to? I found the wire that is going to the light, but what are those 2 black wires? are they the antenna? They go all the way to the top of the case which cannot be opened....>______<...how can i possibly remove it... -
Transfering stuff from my HP case to Antec 300...need help
im1knight replied to im1knight's topic in Tech and Computers
o.O really? i thought the wireless card is supposed to be in a PCI slot....how do i transfer this thing to the antec 300 tho...? and i have looked REAL closely..and i found where to plug them..however i cannot find the manual on it whatsoever, and there is no label on where i should plug each one.... -
Hi, i'm currenty in the middle of switching my M9150f computer's case to the Antec 300 i just got, since i'm upgrading the graphic card to a 9800GTX and the HP case is just not big enough.....(Delaying the plan for a brand new computer) anyways, as i was unplugging everything, i noticed that on the motherboard there is no place to plug in the power and reset button, and also no place for the HD and power light. Then i found a wire that's running all the way to the back of the case, and looks like it's connected to where the power button is located, but the question is... how do i move this to my new case?? and there's no plug for te power button, only 2 wires...I have taken some pics below...sorry about the pic being a bit blurry this is how that thing looks like...the white plugs seems to be the lights, while the black one seems to be the power button this is the kind of lock it got, which i can't find a place to put it on the Antec 300.... and this is where it used to be... i'll be waitng for reply online, since i already took my computer apart... and i might be totally wrong about the power... if im wrong, can you guys tell me where it is? cuz i've been looking for it, and i just can't find it...... Thank you for helping

well i just noticed a bug where firefox use up to 60% of my CPU, and it's from a tab i just opened, the page is very laggy too, theres no animation or anything, just ads and words.... So i closed the tab and opened it again, and everything is normal...never experienced that before...

there was a firefox 3.5?! I didn't hear anything about it until today..... so basically for all of this time they are running beta tests etc on 3.5 while i didn't know anything about it? o.O Anyway...going to upgrade now ---upgraded...o wow...imageshack toolbar doesn't work...and i seriously think the old icon is better....Plus i think that open a new tab thing is useless, since i usually just click homepage when i want to open a new tab lol...But i do get a feeling that its slightly faster, so yah! lol

Well....for some reason, when i turn on my computer today, my XP drive is down to 28.2GB today! UGH! I did not install or download anything yesterday at all...i run disk cleanup, but it only came up with 328KB of files.... to ultimania92, i do use fraps, however i delete all the things i recorded after i upload my videos. Plus, it's recording to a different drive anyways. I used moleskinsoft directory size, and i end up with 76884.34MB, which i think is 76.8GB of space used(still surprising..cuz i REALLY didn't install anything...) So i used 76.8GB of space out of my 120GB drive, and i'm supposed to have 28.2GB of free space left?? They don't add up to 120 in anyways..(Windows show up as 117, but those numbers still don't add up....) i'm still missing 43.2GB here....it does not looks like someone hacked into my computer and used my computer as storage, cuz then it should show up in the software as a giant file(or should it..?) plus i got all clean from all of my AV and AS softwares. I just shrink the space allowed for system restore points from max to min...(from 14GB to 1GB), and i got 7GB of my space back(DAMN! why do they take up so much space??) So now i'm missing 36.2GB... where could that be? I searched all over google, and system restore points is like the last place i can get from google...so idk....where else can i go to find my space back? xD

but those files take up to 53GB is kinda unrealistic...and Ccleaner cleans the temp file.

Well...I was installing some addons today for my FSX, and all of the sudden i realized my XP drive(the one included my FSX) only have 30.1GB of space left! and the original space i gave it was 120GB. So i checked my FSX folder, it's only 36.8GB big with my addons, i have more than that installed, however on a different drive. Then i checked my GTA IV folder, which turns up to be 15.6GB big, but really thats about all the big programs i installed on this OS. But that's only 52.4GB, I have no video or pictures or music stored on this drive, and the rest of the programs are all installed on my other drives. I do have MS word installed on the drive, but that's only 1GB in size, and other than that....i basically don't have anything installed... All my downloaded files are downloaded to another drive as well, so that cannot be the problem. Yes, i have used Ccleaner, and 30.1GB is the size AFTER it cleaned all the stuff out... So basically i lost around 67GB ish of hard drive to nowhere....and now it's getting kinda crowded for me to install addons in...any idea on where it might be? :?: EDIT: I checked my documents and setting folder, it's around 8GB in size(why so big?) ok, so now i got 59GB more to go.... Then i checked my program files folder, minus FSX and GTA IV, it's 5.6GB. So now i got 53.4 GB missing..... the rest of the folder in the drive is only 500MB total in size... This is all the places files might be at that i can think of....so...any ideas?

I'd rather not wait for the i5..... i5 is only Duo core and it has a graphic die inside of it. I think it might actually cause it to use more power and create more heat....however i might be wrong. I'm just looking forward to the 32nm i7.... i didn't see his budget before.... Just go for the 45nm i7. For $1500, you can get a i7 920, and overclock it to 3.6Ghz, get 8GB of DDR3 ram, and a nice Gigabyte X58 motherboard, and also a nice cooler for that CPU, (ex. cooler master v8), with a GTX 285 video card, and a 750W PSU should do it to power all of those. Get one from Antec, since i trust their quality and have many of them myself. That config should let you handle 95% of the games out there. But again, all depends on your budget...

Hard drive space not freeing up after deleting files?
im1knight posted a topic in Tech and Computers
This is really weird, today i decided to delete some game installation program, which was sitting there for over a year already, and those stuff together were around 2GB ish, however when i deleted all of them, i did not see a change in disk space at all! It was 86.1GB free before i deleted it, and it just went to 86.2GB....100MB improvement when i deleted over 2GB of stuff? Yes i have emptied the recycle bin etc, is there any idea where the space went?? It's not a disk i got my OS installed on, it's used for file storage only, so i don't think any system related stuff can be the answer...any ideas? Running XP and Vista dual boot btw, however i see the same disk space in both of them. -
Geforce 9550? I never heard of that..did you mean by 9500? if you do, i think that graphic card is way too weak to play any good games.... and it's like a waste of money to use it with that Quad core CPU. I'd say go for a GTX 260 at least for that CPU, if you want to play many of the latest games(I suppose that's your intention?), Or if you are really short on budget, you can go with a 9800GTX, but its just not a smart idea to spend so much money on a CPU and spend so little on the GPU....since the overall result will suck. Btw, i love the match of a E8400 CPU with a GTX 260 or 9800GTX video card. It's like the best combo lol. Many of my friends get the best result with the lowest cost with those two. Since that E8400 can easily go to 3.6Ghz with proper cooling, and those cards are good enough to handle anything that CPU can handle. Also go for more RAM if possible, since they are not that expensive anyway, 4GB is getting kinda short i think, since i'm using all of my 3GB of RAM playing GTA IV or FSX, or any game that require lots of computing power. So just go get a 8GB set, if not then a 6GB, however it's no big deal if you run out of budget. That video card you got there is a much bigger problem lol... also, the PC will boot up much faster with a 32MB cache hard drive, (About 3 mins faster for me loading XP, from a 8MB to a 16MB cache, i expect the samething happen from 16 to 32 lol)

Will this motherboard and this RAM fit? (not real sure)
im1knight replied to im1knight's topic in Tech and Computers
I'd like to play on higher, but that's the max resolution my monitor atm supports. It's just a 19" monitor, so can't really expect more of it.. But i am expecting a monitor upgrade to a 24" one which will support higher resolutions(ie. 1920x1080 or higher) sometimes after the computer is done, but as of now i just don't have the budget to upgrade the monitor. I'll thinking about the case and the fan, thank you for your reply... but if i wait for the DX11 thing to come out, it would be then VERY close to the 32NM core i7 CPU to come out, then i would have to wait on that lol... But according to intel they are planning to producing it in late Nov... then it's gonna take a month for the price to cool down,so basically that means i would have to upgrade my computer next year >.< but...i'll think about it....hard decision, lol that means im stuck with this crap for another 6 month... -
Will this motherboard and this RAM fit? (not real sure)
im1knight replied to im1knight's topic in Tech and Computers
yes, i'm getting this aftermarket cooler for the 920, since i'm going to OC it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835103055 however, i know from the reviews that the size of this one can be a problem in a lot of the cases, so i'm still looking for a nicely priced full ATX tower case that will fit this with no problem. I was looking at this case, but then from the review i learned it will not fit that cooler, might have to change the side fan, which i'm not so good at.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811133021 Then i saw this, which is a perfect fit for the cooler, and i love the design, but more expensive than the one above.. If i go with this case, the price of the tower will go to $1530 with rebate...I'm hoping to keep it at $1400 ish.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811119138 About the DX11, It might be a bigger hit than the DX10 games, but I'd say every single game i play right now is still DX9(some support DX10, but all support DX9)..I don't see the point of waiting for the DX11 since for games to get adapted to it will take some time, i think only new games will use DX11, and i don't think they will completely erase DX9/DX10 support when they use DX11 for the game(Hopefully not..., or lots of people are gonna go mad). Plus, I need a card anyway...my computer currently with the 8500GT is only scoring 2600 on 3Dmark, and it's killing me big time playing games.. I think the only reason it's not coming to XP is cuz XP is not going to be supported anymore by 2010. and i mainly play on 1440x900, since that's the max resolution my monitor supports. I'm not a pro at building systems, but this is the spec i'm gonna go with: do you think it's good for the price? If not any suggestions on lowering the price? CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115202 CPU Cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835103055 RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820227365 Hard drive(x2): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822136284 ( The reason i'm going for so big on the hard drive is that i already ate up 720GB of hard drive in 6 month, so i'm just gonna go with a total of 2TB for more storage) Graphic card : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130492 Motherboard : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128374 Case(3 choices) : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811133021 (Don't really like the design, don't fit perfectly with the cooler, however good reviews and good cooling) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811119138 ( Perfect design, perfect cooling, i love it, a bit expensive tho...) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811146029 ( Love the design, nice cooling, bad reviews about cables inside the tower) power supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817371025 DVD drive : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827140034 wireless card : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833127075 sorry for the long post... -
Will this motherboard and this RAM fit? (not real sure)
im1knight replied to im1knight's topic in Tech and Computers
Thank you for your reply well again, i'm using a prebuild computer, so overclocking is out of the question. But even if overclock is available, if i want to keep the Q6600 for overclock and get a graphic card upgrade, i would have to upgrade motherboard, upgrade tower, upgrade RAM, upgrade power supply, upgrade CPU cooler, upgrade video card and at the end, it's like getting a new computer...just for keeping that Q6600. So i'd just go for a i7 processor with more room to upgrade, might be a little over power right now, but you never know 1 year later.....The computer with Q6600 i'm using now will most likely go to the study room, to upgrade the current crappy one in there with a Pentium 4 processor, which freezes very often, and crash a lot. and about the GTX 285...the normal ones are around $80 more than the GTX 280 on newegg...are you sure they are the same price? this one is GTX 280 for $244 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130492 and the cheapest GTX 285 i found is $269, and it's recertified with lots of bad reviews..... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130488 and since DX10 is not even popular right now, i can't think of DX11 being popular right away...most games are still DX9. So i might just stick with DX10... and about the RAM with the motherboard, so will they fit? I didn't see you mention that on your post...and thanks for explaining the XMP -
Will this motherboard and this RAM fit? (not real sure)
im1knight replied to im1knight's topic in Tech and Computers
oh..and just 1 additional question... will this power supply work with a GTX 280? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817371025 I know a GTX 280 need a minimum of 40A on the 12V. But does that mean a total of 40A on all 12V outputs or 40A on a SINGLE 12V output? -
Well, i'm building myself a new computer here, and i got a bit confused when i come to the motherboard and RAM part.. i'm choosing this motherboard for my new i7 processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128374 and these DDR3 RAMs that go with it http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820227365 well... on the motherboard spec page, it says the Memory Standard is DDR3 2100+/1333...i'm not really sure what that means... does it mean the frequency is either going to be at 1333 or higher than 2100 or something? Or does it mean the minimum is 1333, and you can go higher from that...Not really sure what that "/" means here... and i also found this RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820227388 which is basically pretty much the same spec except it have a XMP, and it's more expensive. I don't really understand what does the XMP do..does it help a lot when it comes to gaming? and i noticed on Gigabyte's website, it says "According to Intel spec definition that XMP DIMMs and DDR3-1600 above are supported for one DIMM per channel only". I learned this means you can only put 1 RAM stick into one slot..but how do you put more than one RAM stick into one slot anyway...?
