9600GT on a 350W PSU
HP pavilion m9150f, brought in April of 2008

9600GT on a 350W PSU
uhh...so what will be an example of the problems? and as i said...i can buy one without a problem, but the case won't fit, and that's the real issue here...

Computer upgrade
i'm kinda surprised that PC can still run to this day...

9600GT on a 350W PSU
Well..i know a lot people are going to tell me change that PSU, but the thing is i can't. It's a prebuilt PC, so the case is real small and weird...if i buy another PSU, i don't think it's gonna fit. Ok anyways...I know that i can't really trust an OEM PSU, but i'm just wondering if there's any chance of running 9600GT. I realized that 9600GT that's non overclocked only require 65W of power at maximum load, under PCI power that is. I don't think i have a 6pin connector, and i just want to know if my PSU is good enough for this card... since it's way better than the 8500GT i'm using atm. here is the label on my PSU on the output part: +5v==13A +3.3v==15A -12V==0.8A +12Va==18A +12Vb==18A +5Vstb==2A +12Va and +12Vb shall not exceed 300W Maximum output power: 350W ok..that's the label, and HIPRO is the brand. Currently according to my UPS unit, my computer WITH my monitor running under full load(100% CPU load, 2.5G out of 3G RAM used, 2 hard drives spinning@ highest speed, graphic card at maximum load ) use about 245W. normally under idle it only use about 123W to 158W. So i'm guessing that i didn't use too much power after all... So i think it's able to run the 9600? I'm a complete noob at the PSU...so any help would be appreciated. My computer contains the follows: Q6600 @2.4Ghz 3GB RAM (2x1G,2x512) 360GB HD x2, 7200RPM Nvidia 8500GT 512MB 2 DVD drives(1 for HD DVD) 1 card reader 1 TV card( TV tuner, whatever you call it) and it would be helpful if you can actually find a 9600GT for me that's not using the 6Pin power connector.. since i realized it's kinda hard to find...maybe i just overlooked it on neweggs...

McAfee?
theres no point of returning it if you already installed... just use it until the subscription is over. I tried it before, it does cause OS to load slower, just like norton... I use AVG and spybot search&destory, altho AVG is kinda going down hill these days...

surge protector UL label problem....
how come my surge protector come with a UL label of "relocatable power strip"? I mean this is not a very cheap surge protector... but according to http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/su ... ector6.htm , a surge protector must have a UL listing of transient voltage surge suppressor..... Well....i found this"transient voltage surge suppressor" label on my 9 dollar surge protector, which only hold up to 109joules... Now i can't find it on my $25 surge protector that hold up to 2500joules with max voltage of 6000v? The $9 one is made by GE, which i guess is a pretty good brand on electronics, and my $25 one is by Radioshack, which i brought from their store... Both of them have indicator light, and the $25 one from Radioshack included protection to modems and cable. So is there any experts out there that can tell me how important this UL listing label is? I mean i saw it on the website.. but does it REALLY matters when it comes to a big power surge? When a big one comes, which of these 2 will hold up? There are some construction going on around my house, and the power surge is a problem since the first day i moved in here, every time the AC starts, refrigerator starts, ceiling fan starts, or even microwave starts, the lights blink, and my speaker make a "pop" sound, this never happened at my old house so...idk....There's 2 computers hooked up to this, so if it doesn't do the job right, i'm losing over $1700 when the worst happens... any ideas? thanks!. oh..and i can't buy a more expensive surge protector since they are generally huge and there's no room to fit it under my table

GPU memory clock and memory clock data rate...
how do you know how much power a card draw? Newegg doesn't tell me anything about it, and my tower is pretty small, so i don't know if it's gonna even fit in there... I wish a 8800GT can fit tho, if it's not out of the power supply limit
-
GPU memory clock and memory clock data rate...
i think there is no limitation on overclocking the graphic card, but it's indeed impossible to overclock the CPU on my prebuilt. If there is a limit on the overclock, like my laptop, the manufacture will prevent me from downloading nvidia drivers, instead i must use HP drivers only even through it's nvidia card to prevent overclocking. However my laptop let me use the nvidia driver i downloaded, so i don't think there is anything on preventing it. Unless i overclock it too much... I know i shouldn't be overclocking a prebuilt, but the graphic card is the bottle neck atm, and frame rates are extremely low on some games, not just FSX. i would buy a new card if my power supply can hold it.. since it's only 350W
-
GPU memory clock and memory clock data rate...
well....it's a prebuilt computer and i don't think changing the card is an option fore prebuilts..Plus i don't even think my PSU can handle a higher end card...Plus i think 8500 only come in 256MB or 512MB, and i believe my card is by ASUS so what you meant by is that my memory clock is already at near it's maximum? If so that explains a lot... So are my temperatures normal at all? I know nvidia card's limit are at 130C, and the highest i ever saw on my GPU was 78, i dunno about Q6600's temp limit, but highest i ever saw so far was 75 under 100% load for over 20 minutes. I'm playing FSX nowdays and it's a very CPU dependent game, so my CPU is almost always at 100% load, the only reason i want to overclock my graphic card is so i can have a little better frame rate in dense auto-gen area. Going from 475 to 500 helped 1-3 frame rate, however i'm not sure if i should try going higher cuz of the temp...

GPU memory clock and memory clock data rate...
What's the difference between them? I have a 8500GT(yea i know, it's pretty bad) and i think it came a bit underclocked. Since i saw the factory setting for 8500GT should be 500MHZ core and 800MHZ Memory... mine came at 475core and 475memory... I tried to overclock it, but as soon as i overclock the memory clock, i get BSOD. I think i might be overclocking the memory..but people have been getting it up to 1000Mhz, and i only increased mine to 500....what's the problem here? I looked under nvidia control panel, and i noticed on the memory clock it reads " 475Mhz(950Mhz data rate)" So which one is the real speed the 1000Mhz people are talking about? I know my card might not handle up to 1000, but i don't think 500 is out of the limit.... If it's the data rate they are talking about..then i might have exceeded the max limit..but if it's the 475Mhz, why i'm i getting BSOD? Also what temperature should my GPU be running at? It was running at 68idle, and 73C while gaming before any overclocking, and when i push it to 500Mhz, the temperature goes up to 69idle, and 77C gaming. Is this normal on a prebuild desktop? And why i'm i not seeing temperature tab under Nvidia control panel? The temperatures are from speedfans And is Q6600 running at 48C idle and 73C under full load normal? Is 73C really bad for the CPU?

Speedfan and CPUID showing different CPU tempatures?
ok i used CoreTemp, and it turns out to be the same as CPUID. 50C at idle... Yes i do have an intel stock fan and it's a prebuild computer so i can't do a lot about it. But this is almost the same temperature as my laptop which runs on AMD Turionx2 at idle... Arent my desktop supposed to have a better cooling than my laptop? i also don't see a lot of dust in my fan area...so idk..is this how hot it's supposed to run under stock fan? Cuz now if i play game, which require it to run at 100%, the temperature is kinda scary...over 70degrees...

Speedfan and CPUID showing different CPU tempatures?
Erm....today i saw someone using CPUID to test their CPU temperatures, i've been always using speedfan for the temperature, so i decided to try CPUID. But when i download and installed it, they showed different values! CPUID shows my CPU runs at 49C idle while speedfan shows 28C. This is a big difference! Which one should i trust? Cuz 49C at idle for Q6600 is way too high, plus i'm not overclocking or anything..... However the temperatures on hard drive and graphic card is the same. So can anyone tell me the answer which one to trust?

Youtube + Hypercam = High Definition please?
well, you are recording on a 1440x900 screen doesn't mean your video resolution is 1440x900. video resolution is how big it came up on your screen when you play it. I used frame instead resolution on my previous post, srry about that. But in order to let youtube see that it qualify for HQ video, the minimum is 640x400, and it cannot be any random resolution too( EX. 740x345).
-
Youtube + Hypercam = High Definition please?
well the quality have to be high to begin with. Then you can use " Any Video Converter" to convert it to a mpeg4 file with frame at least 640x480, you can go higher if you don't wanna upload for nothing just in case. the keep the option below that to 1500, and frame rate to 25-30. you upload that to youtube, it should show up as high quality.

ZD Soft screen recorder won't work on XP?
Well..I know that they have released the newest 3.0 version, however they come with a 30 day trail, unlike the previous version that only limit the time you can record(5 minutes). However for some random reason, this screen recorder works perfectly on my vista OS, but refuses to work on XP pro. Because vista eat so much graphic memory, and my graphic card is not that good, so i want to record in XP to receive better FPS. IDK what's going on, it doesn't work on my laptop as well( also runs XP) ZD soft screen recorder is like the best free screen recorder i've ever seen, it produce VERY small output file(no larger than 50MB per recording) with amazing quality. But this problem is killing me. I'm not saying the program won't open, but when it finish recording, and when i open the file up, everything is frozen if it's an animated surface. No matter if its java or flash or any other game you can think of. However it works fine on plain desktop, where no animation is going on. Since i want to record for games, recording stuff without animation is not possible. So is there a solution out there for this problem? or any other software that can come close to this? (I hate fraps, output file WAY to big)

AVG free 8.0 cannot enable auto update?

AVG free 8.0 cannot enable auto update?
Today i just realized that on one of my old computers, the windows warn me the antivirus software is out dated. when i checked AVG, apparently the auto update was not enabled. So i simply enabled it and see what happens. But for some reason, every time i check again, the auto update disables. and if i just leave it, it's not gonna auto update as well. I also tried reinstall etc, but didn't help either. Any idea why is this happening? and how to fix this?

comp for rs? prebuilt.
ATI Radeon HD is the graphic card, and i think there should be some number that follows..... the more video memory= more scenery files can be loaded faster=better frame rates= less lag However the GPU is more important tho

My dad loves Norton [Internet Security/Firewall Question]
AVG free and zonealarm are great. If your dad doesn't believe in free stuff, just let him pay for AVG and zonealarm. Better off paying for a good one than a crappy one.

comp for rs? prebuilt.
hm.. things might be different nowdays, but when i brought the computer i'm using, Intel core 2 Quad Q6600 3GB RAM 720GB HD nvidia 8500GT vista home premium well..it's junk now, but the price i brought it was $1150, while Dell cost $1350 for the exact same spec. But again, i guess the Best Buy or Circuit City sell computers for cheaper. At least that's where i brought mine. So if you can go 2 any of those, do it. It's much faster, no need to wait for delivery. but the down side is you can't customize your computer... Oh btw laura, Dell is giving vista home BASIC for that computer, while HP is home premium. and i think that's what made a price difference. Doesn't really matter if you want to install XP yourself, but that's just extra 100 bucks...

ipod touch alternatives
i still don't understand..... What's so good about ipod touch? I mean the whole idea of an ipod is to listen 2 music...and this big thing is pretty hard to carry around in your pockets. If you want to go online anywhere, buy a tablet PC or a notebook. when my old ipod nano dies, i'm getting zunes, i hate itunes....
-
comp for rs? prebuilt.
just shop online for a HP one, they are selling their PC cheap these days.... since you are not doing any heavy gaming, i would recommend this one... it's a pretty low end PC to me, but again, for RS i think it's more than enough, and should be a good update from your old PC. http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopp ... 60z_series just click on customize to buy and begin customizing...

Windows Vista.
erm...theres 7400rpm hard drive speed? i thought theres only 7200...... well...that computer is pretty much screwed up to run vista to begin with...it's almost the same spec as the laptop i got almost 2 and half years ago.... how much did you get it for anyway?
