Not what I had in mind...

Well exam week is coming up, 9 Hours to be exact. For the past month or so I've really thought over my situation that I'm in at college.

I'm currerently enrolled in the IT program and I honestly can't picture myself doing it any longer. Computers have always been a hobby/ leisure event in my past but now I'm finding that I just don't want to deal with them anymore.

The thing that's really grinding my gears is the monotony behind it. I feel like I need to do something more with my life. I'm currently sitting #2 in my class but I'm the least interested by far. Which is why I'm in need of your opinions.

I've always wanted to be an EMT. I can feel proud about my job and I really enjoy pressure. It's not that easy though. My parents forked out a huge portion of my tuission this year and I don't know how to tell them that it's going to be thrown away. :ohnoes:

At best, I can try and get half of my tussion back because the 2nd semester doesnt start until January. I know that they'd rather see me happy and that their money would be well spent but thats easier said then done.

Advise

Any way you could stay at the same school to become an EMT and use the classes you're taking now as electives?

Negative. In order to become an EMT/Paradmedic i'll have to enroll in paramedicine school.

I did the same thing you did.

I went to an IT school when I was 17 for CNC machining and I ended up not liking it at all, so I got my money back minus like $300 since I had been going for a month-ish.

I'm sure your parents would rather see you do something you WANT to do. So just tell them you ended up not liking it at all and you want to try something else. Usually with parents, it's not what you're doing, it's that you're doing something, period. :P

I did the same thing also :P Started off college as a IT major, and after a semester of pure boredom, I switched to be a teacher.

So, you are in a college that does not offer any medical services courses at all? That's kind of odd :|

Either way, it seems like you are only a semester in, and if you decide to switch, you will be able to get your 2nd semester tuition back, and apply it to a new school.

What's so bad about the IT program?

I think he said it was boring.

@Krunk; if you make a decision, make it fast so you can get your second half tuition back. If you're in first year, losing one semester total isn't a big deal at all (happens all the time around here; i have a friend that has switched his major 3 times) and you could always work during the 2nd semester that you'll be missing to pay back your parents.

Yeah well, I read that part but I want details :P

If you have any experience in computers, the first year or two of IT work is the most boring thing you can put yourself through.

First year: You are in basic computer classes. Learning what a web browser is, coding simple html, learning how to use telnet and ftp....

Enough that your brain leaks out of your eye sockets.

I'll do it!

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

In the event that the weighted companion cube does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice.

I was in a similar position to this myself. I had applied to go to University, choosing 2 different IT courses and a publishing degree. I already had the grades required to enter the IT courses and the Publishing one was my longshot that I needed to work hard for. However, I got to the same point as you're at now; I realised that I didnt want to work in IT so I took a risk and turned down both the IT courses that Id been accepted for. If I hadn't got into the Publishing degree I would've had to do about 2 years in a local college in order to get into Uni.

Personally if I was in your position Id just cut my losses and do something else, if your in your first year it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

IT courses sound kinda easy, no?

That's like saying "beans taste good, no?". It totally depends on the person, the course, and the specific area within IT that is being studied.

Essentially, if you do the work you can pass the course. The thing is doing the work and understanding it is completly different. I don't want to finish college and graduate and have to use a text book while I'm on the work site.

I'd rather be out doing something better with my time. I've got my ideal job locked down working at a gameplay store for now so if I can work full time I'll be able to pay for my next years tuission all by myself.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.
