Well... if i am doing stone walls then i try and outline with a dark color and then move inwards getting lighter...

For stone you need two lighter strips at the top and rh or lh of the stone with other darker lines at the bottom...

Its pretty difficult to explain.. I'll post a pic as soon as i finish my new pixel...

that sounds horificly like pillow shading!

weeelll

imo I gave up one pixel art (in its purest form) Along time ago... I define myself as a windows painter... I now try and use as many colors as possible to achieve the result I want...

I feel that many people try to dither when they could easily use a nice and simple medium color. They end up putting 2x the amount of work into a piece that they need to, and sometimes (with beginers) they get really frustraited when thier dithering doesn't look good. Where as selecting a meduim color you can just draw a straight line through there...

Urrg... that got a bit long winded :wall:

i dont have a major problem with using extra colours, its the style thats pillow shading. basicly lighter in the middle darker at the edges.

yeah i want a GOOD tutorial showing you how you can achieve good results. complexity wise i dont mind too much, i just want a texturing quality that matches the rest of my work. (so nothing too good =P)

Dithering is very usefull for texturing, its difficult to get a non- "bubbly" or flat peice without it. Or at least I think so.

This was all that I could find, most of my old links are dead :(

this is only done very quickly, but with bricks/rocks you don't want them to look flat like a smooth wall, each brick should still have relative depth.. You could simply add a highlight at the top and shading at the bottom but in all honestly it just doesn't seem very interesting and no level of dithering will change that, plus it may not be the best lightsource choice.. instead just imagine each brick has a bumpy surface, highlight areas that you would think to be raised and add shadows to add more depth acording to your lightsource..

oh and with that zoggle link, great tips for small bricks but these are much larger and you must combine what you learn with that rocks tut too..
