"Mortal Kombat" a Documentry

Now, before you jump on my throat saying OMGOMGYOUTUBE! this is merly a starting point of a discussion.

The trailer is made by a bunch of politians who, as you can tell from watching, are against gaming.

ech writer Dean Takahashi - that would be Dean "Opening The Xbox/The Xbox 360 Uncloaked" Takahashi - mentioned an upcoming documentary on his blog. Entitled "Moral Kombat," the trailer for it is mostly a sensationalist sort of hook whose urgent piano strains to convey the unrelenting danger of the coming Cyber Game War. I sincerely doubt the tone of the piece matches this trailer, given some of the participants - for example, I don't think that Henry Jenkins would be party to a hysterical dialogue, even in an attempt to tame it.

I haven't seen it, though I would love to. We did, however, approach their trailer with our characteristic scorn as is required of us by the Penny Arcade Charter. There's a lot of strange quotes and received wisdom I don't especially have any use for, and to dredge up that fruity "9/11 Terrorists Trained On MS Flight Simulator" stuff to score rhetorical points in a completely unrelated discussion is (I have chosen to be polite) weak sauce. You'd better have a Goddamn good reason for invoking that day, and "so I can sound like a smart mother* on the teevee" ain't gonna cut it.

And there's ol' Jack, crankin' out them biblical allusions and praying for his teen apocalypse. I'm not sure he actually understands that if one of his demented fantasies comes true, that doesn't make him a prophet.

This is penny arcade's thought on the subject.

Anyways, I'll post more of my thoughts once it starts up, but I'm interested in hearing everyone elses thoughts as well about this.

Completely off this topic, but similiar anyway. Did anyone hear about the news story that many parents wanted games such as Tekken/Street Fighter banned? They justified it because many characters resemble younger children. :| [insert image of ~20 year old girl holding a teddy].

But, i'll watch the video and edit this topics points...

Edit:

The people in the video don't know what they're talking about. Video games have a scoring system based on their content. By 18, people should be able to tell the difference between reality and a game. So there's no point saying that teenagers under 18 being corrupted because of games like GTA/Hitman, that's down to the parent buying it.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly cad.

What really got on my nerves is when they said that if you play microsoft flight simulator you could learn how to fly a plane. *!?

Other than that I pretty much agree with Tycho from penny arcade.

Oh, and you have to love how every person in that trailer has probaly never actualy sat down and played a video game in their life. For christs sake they showed a portion of "myst" in their trailer, the most un-violent game alive.

And Abe's Odyssey. That's not only the least violent, it's one of the more childish games.

I laughed when they said that! But really.. I played my frist FPS when I was 7 years old. I have yet to go out on the streets and shoot anyone. I think the government should stay out of things that they know nothing about. Hitting keys on your keyboard isn't going to teach you to fly and airplane or shoot a gun accurately. It's far more complicated in reality than it is on a screen.

Exactly. You know, it would be interesting if they actualy hosted gamer's thoughts in this "documentry" too, but right now its completly one sided.

:? Too many assumptions are being made in that movie...

Notice how one guys says "We are who we pretend to be" when they show a picture of a nazi flag in a game? Im not sure, but im pretty sure ive never heard of a game where you play from the P.O.V. of a nazi. This just proves that they automatically think children can't think and understand for themselves what they interact with.

Also, they try and compare the 9/11 hijackers using flight simulators to compare to 9 year olds who play games killing cops. What kinda bull is that? The hijackers originly had the motive to do what they did, and the flight simulator was the training. I don't think 9 year olds want to kill cops, and just use Grand theft auto as their training.

Lastly, the movie is very hypocritical of its self. one line that pops up says "Freedom of choice". If t hey say Games are bad, why put that line in there? It is our choice to do actions outside of video games.

Is there a full version, or is that all? Cause id like to see the more of that kinda stuff just to point out all the bullcrap.

I think there will be a full version coming out Lion.

One of the big things I have wrong with this is how it says that video games generaly reward violence.

Well, last time I checked if I started to kill someone in GTA the cops went after me, and they wern't nice. :(

To me video games are a way to releave violence, a way to use it and get the agression out of your system without having to hurt anyone.

At any rate I'm sure this is going to be a fad until the "next big thing" comes out. I mean, D&D used to be the devil right? And those darn books back in the days were quite full of trash too.

BUT NO!! THEY ARE BEING SMALL MINDED IDIOTS !!

they take a look at GTA and say.. LETS BAN VIDEOGAMES BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL VIOLENT!!

no.. just no... would they prefer that kids were out there killing cops for real? i doubt it...

im seriously you guys.. this is the biggest pile of BS i have watched .. ever...

theses guys dont deserve to have a say in how the world works because they are idiots who cant see the consequences of what they are doing or why they are doing it..

it isnt a videogames fault if a kid goes out and mimics it and kills someone, its the kids fault for being a [developmentally delayed]...

also - why the hell are kids getting their hands on games like GTA in the first place? - its an 18 for a reason!! see that sticker on the box parents? that means you DONT buy it for an 8 year old!

*Contains swearing.

Responsibility falls on the parents to keep their kids from committing acts of violence. If your child plays a simple game and then shoots someone, then you've failed your duty as a parent.

Thanks for that link. I deffinitly, for one, hope that it gets on the front page of youtube along with all of the other big videos. =D>

That post would've been more convincing if you didn't make it sound like a 12 year old having a tantrum.

What they are saying is that the violence in the game puts the idea to go out and do it for real in their head. They're thinking that to kill a plant you need to destroy it's roots. But what they're forgetting that it's the parents choice to allow their child to play these games.
