Parabola
802.11g uses adaptive rate selection to choose a data rate appropriate to the signal strength. If you're far away or there's lots of material between you and the router it will switch to a lower data rate to maintain a decent bit error rate. Otherwise you'll end up getting loads of transmission errors and the data rate may effectively be slower anyway.

Nadril
to be honest I wouldn't worry about it unless your moving incredibly large files over between computers. Your most likely never going to actualy fullfill even a 1mbs speed on the internet.

Parabola
er.,,basically theres nothin between the router and my labtop....its just 2 rooms away. So there is stuff between the router and the laptop then. Your most likely never going to actualy fullfill even a 1mbs speed on the internet. That's totally not true... You will easily reach 1Mb/s (128KB/s) when downloading files. If it were true then there would be no market for 2Mb/s+ connections.

Stupid question, but I've still got to ask... have you tried to turn off all computers and equipment (meaning routers/modems) and turning them back on in order: modem, router(s), computers... If not I would try that first, if that doesn't work then you may want to start looking at issues with files that were downloaded, or as weez said - maybe a new cordless phone or changed wifi at the neighbors homes.
