runiburger Posted February 17, 2007 Share Posted February 17, 2007 Today I woke up and picked up my parcle from the local post office. My new computer, w00t! So ran home, took it out of the box and plugged it in. Made all the connections and flicked on the switch at the back of the power supply. And BANG! something blew up. I notice the switch at the back says "115V" (In Australia we use 240V) and I rip out the cable and switch it to 240V then plug it back in. It's not turning on...I bet something is wrong with the power supply. :cry: I hope that it hasn't fried the machine. It cost me a lot of money. Is there anything I can do? Please! das1330 Posted February 17, 2007 Share Posted February 17, 2007 you blew up the power supply. setting it to a lower voltage then the input probly overloaded its capasitors, making them explode. you will probly need a new one (dont worry, unless you have like a 1000w powersupply, there like 30$ us) try newegg.com if you need a new one, or call the manufacturer. Stuart_G Posted February 17, 2007 Share Posted February 17, 2007 Personally, I'd give who ever you bought it off a ring and tell them they shipped it with the wrong PSU settings, thus blowing it up. If they sell something, it should work out of the box with out having to change anything. Be nice about it, and hopefully they'll send a replacement, if not, you'll have to get another one. This or this should be fine replacements, unless you're running some stupidly powerful rig. Actually, would you mind listing the parts in your system just so we can see what you need to power? runiburger Posted February 18, 2007 Author Share Posted February 18, 2007 Darn, I called them and they said I would have to pay a lot of money for a new Power Supply, but it wasn't the world's best it was just some random unknown brand. Power isn't really my strong point so could anyone recommened a good power supply that can run a 8800GTX? Thank you. :D BTW I didn't even know that little switch existed. Also, don't just 'try something with 500 plus watts'; amperage also comes into factor of Power Supplies. An 8800GTX is required at least 30 amps on the 12v rail. The 'Seasonic S12 Energy Plus 550W' would do with it's triple 12v rails totalling more than the 30 amps needed. Here's the link again here.... Although, you may want to try something, a little bit more remotely powerful, and you may want to try browsing some of your own personal preference Australian computer stores online or locally to your place. Examples of good brands include SilverStone, OCZ, Antec, Seasonic and Enermax. With a bit of research you should be able to get one for less then $130 aud. Parabola Posted February 19, 2007 Share Posted February 19, 2007 When I had my 8800GTX (before I returned it) I was using an OCZ Game X Stream 700W. I would recommend against getting the suggested 550W one simply because the 8800GTX box recommends 600W or higher (at least mine did). Seasonic are a good brand though. The 730W Hiper I'm looking at now is modular with the sockets on the bottom, so just make sure you're able to plug them in and it will fit your case. I say this because if you have something like a Lian Li or Antec P180 it won't fit due to the PSU mounting being on the bottom, but if its just like any other case with the PSU mounted at the top, it will be fine.
