  1. Started playing space engineers survival with a ship I built in creative. Things go so much slower in creative, but it allows me to build and use purpose built craft and machines, so there is more stuff to actually do and play with in a way. More content. Will be interesting to see where this goes. So far, I built a mining drone to replace my bulky manned mining ship I brought with me (wanted some facilities so I could skip the 'picking up rocks by hand' part of everything, that first few hours of pointless setup.
  2. Picked up Starpoint Gemini 2 which was on sale yesterday. Still in early development, but I like the changes they've made from the first game. Only gripe so far is that with the 3d combat, enemy ships like to fly over me and it's a royal pain to try and keep the camera on them while maneouvering my ship so I have weapons pointed the right way. My guess is I need to assign a key for the chase cam and use that. Also starting to play around with space engineers again.

I'd argue the other way myself. I think teaching kids that everything works out happily ever after if you just believe in yourself is a terrible message when it's not tempered by any kind of reality. If you grow up believing that, it strikes me as a fantastic way to become bitter and blame the world for all your problems. Reminds me of my Cousin (the one I was staying with at the cottage). There is a complete moratorium on Disney Princesses in her house, because she feels that they send the wrong message (I think it's the 'helpless damsel in distress waiting for a big strong man to come rescue her' message). Not that her daughter doesn't know about them, or adore them, but she won't add fuel to the fire herself. I think it's very difficult to predict exactly what will stick, and what will traumatize and so on, and I'm not sure if we are always aware ourselves of some of the ideas that might have become ingrained in our heads (because they'll feel so natural). It becomes something you just take for granted as fact. Despite that, I think there is merit to avoiding a constant diet of feel good stories and at least showing some hardship (and strong female characters) so that people don't get so bombarded by one singular idea that it becomes fact for them.
  4. What exactly are you blowing out of your computer other than dust? I think you are just at the limitations of your CPU/GPU. (Probably you are overclocking a homemade system). Just move your computer out into an open area not next to anything that obstructs air flow and try to lower the air temperature in your room 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit. If that doesn't work then give up on maximum settings/draw distance/etc. until you get a new PC. Solid state heat conduction is far greater than convection cooling. Therefore, you need the latest CPU/heat sink designs to make a real difference. I'm not overclocking, but I have a significantly more powerful GPU than my computer came with, and my case does not have good ventilation to begin with, being especially lacking along the top. My room is also usually north of 20 Celsius. I think that with the faceplate removed, my space heater (used without heat of course) will provide enough ventilation through the front to handle games that push heat too far without immediately filling my computer up with dust. And it was nothing but dust that needed to be removed. I just found that an air compressor was extremely effective at cleaning off the fans and heatsink. I'd be removing those pieces for cleaning anyway, so why not use the compressor while it was handy :D And good to know that the plastic waterfalls are from Vanilla, though I'll have to see if there is anything I can do about that, or I'll have to never approach whiterun from the north again. I still hate the way their game engine handles draw distances. I picked up Kinetic Void while it was on sale, but admittedly haven't really played it yet. It wasn't really a buy for use right now, since the game is still a bit early in development for me, but it's far enough that it was worth the good price they were offering so I would have it when the game was at a state I am happy with. Starting to anticipate the release of GTA 5 for the PC, though I am highly suspicious of the video they have on Steam. Their video looks nothing like the footage I've seen, though admittedly all the footage I've seen is recorded off the Xbox 360, which obviously can't push the game any further than GTA 4, being subject to the same limitations. I am still standing by my self promise to wait until I know it's a quality port though.

Rented out the last rooms in my house today to a couple of exchange students who decided that residence just wasn't their style. Apparently the benefits of being an exchange student range beyond being able to take whatever you want and having that count towards your degree. They are also able to get out of residence agreements and meal plans as well. While my University can't be celebrating that privilege, I sure am.
  7. I would like to thank everyone who was diligent in keeping their posts respectful and as non-inflammatory as possible, which has been pretty much everyone who posted on this thread. I want to be perfectly clear that tip.it has absolutely no problems with anyone on the basis of ethnicity, gender, orientation, or religion, and we welcome such discussions, with some provisions on the appropriate boards for some topics as outlined in our rules. What we will not abide are people using straw man arguments such as misconstruing disagreement with a personal idea as an attack on someone's ethnicity/gender/orientation/religion. We will also not abide anyone who uses sock puppets in a debate for any reason, be it to lend support for their own side, or to provoke the other side into being hostile. Lastly, we will not stand for people impersonating another user's account name in RuneScape, and then coming onto our forums and attempting to troll our community with that name. I will also mention that among all the pending moderation actions to be taken against various account, the OP's name will be force changed as the actual owner of that name wishes to make an account here with their own name.
  8. Tried out my Skyrim again yesterday and managed to crash the game, which I am not super enthused about. Planning on giving that a try again tonight remembering that anyone running as many mods as I am should probably be saving more often just to be safe. Waterfalls outside loading distance are also unbelievably ugly, and if I watch more of Gophers videos I'll probably find out if that was in the vanilla game and I didn't notice, or if one of my mods is doing that (they look like giant pieces of plastic before you get close enough to see running water). I remember thinking that game was so beautiful when I first played it, and it still is, or can be. But there are definitely some limitations. I am also going to be regretting not getting the cooling issues with my case totally worked out I think, since Skyrim is still pushing it really hard even after taking a compressor to the CPU heatsink and fan (very effective). I can still cool it as I have been, but then I'll just need the compressor again to clean it out for general use, and I don't normally have access to that much compressed air (and to be clear, I did pull the heatsink out first. I'm not crazy enough to unleash 50 psi inside my case). Maybe I'll go back to trying to fit the fan from my other PC inside my case. My best bet is probably to take the faceplate off and attach it to the front, which is a bit laborious, and will certainly be loud (not a quiet fan in that PC), but should be effective enough.

Managed to actually roll a Sea-Doo today. Was driving my Mom and the Dog after their swim, and came in to dock as I usually do which involves spinning around as I come into the dock. Works like a Charm with just me onboard, but with Mom and the dog I think the extra weight caused it to lean a little more, and the rear end was lower allowing it to catch on the water more. It leaned right on over, we all fell off (the dog was the first to abandon ship), and the Sea-Doo just rolled back to upright (no not a total roll, just to about 90 degrees). Getting a little sad that summer is coming to a close, though I have mostly rented out the other rooms in my house which is fantastic. If all goes well, I might have it full by the end of Thursday, which would be a first for me in the last few years, and a major load off my mind.
  10. Mod Post A few posts have been removed. I would like to remind everyone that at this time, Jagex does not allow multiple accounts owned by the same person to interact for the purposes of affecting the outcome of a minigame, or otherwise exploit game mechanics. As such, under rule 1.1 on these forums, we do not permit users to discuss or admit to using alternate accounts in this way either.
  11. If you want to PvM, you probably want to look for the worlds with the highest population (since they are the least likely to be frequently loosing their players). Excepting worlds like the main trade worlds where people will keep trying to use them regardless because of their specific activity. Frankly, I'd go for these worlds anyway just for general enjoyment.
  12. I didn't see this before now. I am happy to discuss this with the mod team and look at removing this one from the censor list. EDIT: After a brief discussion, it became clear that we no longer need this word in the censor. It shall be removed immediately.

Can't say that I feel like one of the old timers, though it hits me I have one of the earlier join dates around these parts. But there was already an established group in OT and elsewhere when I joined, and I don't think I ever really got around to becoming 'one of them' before I melted into the ether for several years. It's nice to see an old face around even if I don't recognize you :P (Quite frankly, unless @The_Sith wanders back onto these boards, I'm probably not going to recognized someone from the old days).

Spent a weak with my Cousin and her two children (3 and 5). Was a lot of fun, and the kids are relatively low maintenance. Really interesting for me because it's the first time I've ever been around young children for even close to 24+ hours, so I have a much more concrete grasp of the world of being a parent now. Oddly enough, after a week of having almost my entire day revolve around two little people (save the 1-1.5 hours of wine and cribbage once they go to sleep and before we do the same), I think the thing I will miss the least is sleeping in the cottages out building (quilting studio). It's nice in that I don't have to put up with children waking up in the middle of the night, and I can sleep in a bit, but I will not miss having to earn my right to a nights rest by killing one or more bugs every single night. Every night there is a blackly or moth (or both) that needs to be killed, and one night I woke up to the sound of a cricket who was caught in a spiders web (it sounded like someone was clipping their toe nails, which isn't creepy at all when you're waking up at 2am in pitch blackness).
  15. While he will be staying on as Crew, has decided to step down as crew leader. It gives me great pleasure to announced that @Stev has been chosen to succeed him, and will be leading both the moderator and crew teams. Congratulations Stev!
  16. After the resounding success of our moderator recruitment drive, it gives me great pleasure to welcome four new moderators to the green team: @Arceus, , @Miss Lioness, and @Steph. We are very excited to have them on the team, and look forward to working with them.
  17. I still play on occasion. Right now I just don't have the time to invest though, so I might not be playing this update. We'll see.
  18. ME3 is to me, unquestionably the best in the series. People are still angry because of the original ending (which is probably when those reviews were written). I'm not jumping up and down in support of the patched ending, but that's mostly because I like very specific endings to stories, but they cleaned it up and I think they did the series justice. ME3 has a really good story, and it does a good job of taking you in and getting you invested in the lives of people around you. Your past decisions also matter in ME3, much more so than ME2. There are plenty of little nods to stuff you did, but there is also some major impact stuff. It's really good.

Some idle thoughts I've been having. I'm not going to take any stance on who has a right to be were, because I really don't have the knowledge background to even begin to make an informed opinion. First off, I think the Palestinian people in Gaza are in a really terrible position where it is pretty much guaranteed that terrible things are going to happen to them and there is nothing they can do to stop that. Every option for them that I can see involves fighting and death, and that's terrible. Regardless of who started it or why, as soon as Hamas started firing rockets at Israel, conflict was inevitable. While the Israeli missile defense system is largely doing it's job, it does miss things, and I don't believe you can reasonably expect any nation to sit there and allow people to fire rockets at their people and not do anything about it, especially when they have the means to do so. Israel has a duty to consider the safety of their own people before the people of other nations, the same as any other sovereign state. Allowing Hamas to rocket barrage their country until they simply run out is not a realistic option. It would also be a bad idea for Israel to agree to a ceasefire that was anything but unconditional. If Israel is seen to agree to anything as a direct result of the conflict, then they are saying that this tactic achieves results. It's positive reinforcement that what Hamas is doing works, and also provides Hamas with a victory they can hold up to the people of Gaza. Israel is now backed into a corner. But Hamas has also been backed into a corner by Israel's military intervention. If Hamas doesn't have something to show for all their efforts, then they have wasted hundreds of lives, and devastated countless more. Also, you have to imagine that growing up with Israel bombing your country every few years, in addition to invading it, probably creates a pretty massive anti Israeli sentiment in Gaza, which is going to perpetuate and escalate the problem. Hamas is no more in a position to back down than Israel is, and both sides are actively making the problem much worse in the long run. With both sides backed into a corner, I would expect this conflict to continue until both sides have an exit strategy that allows them to say they won. That's short term. Long term, I am going to defer to Thomas L. Friedman's article for the New York Times (and a link to where I found it here). I suspect that Mr. Friedman is correct. I think the only way Israel is ever going to de-escalate the situation with Hamas in Gaza in the long term is to take action that shows the people of Gaza they have another option. Israel has an opportunity with the West Bank to demonstrate to Gaza that Israel is willing to come to the table, and that positive results can be achieved. I think that the situation has long since passed on from what nation has a right to be where, or who did what terrible thing, which is why I've never bothered studying it in depth. What's done is done, and while it's obviously important to anyone involved in the negotiations, ultimately both sides are going to have to move past it and work towards building a future instead. Dwelling on who did what terrible thing and holding that against them forever is how you create escalating feuds that last long after anyone knows why the feud started in the first place. Right now, I feel like you could describe the situation like this. Imagine Israel is a beehive, and Hamas is a hungry person who wants their honey beehive. The bees have refused to give Hamas their honey, so Hamas (perhaps in desperation) has decided to kick the beehive to get honey that way. Finding themselves attacked by bees, Hamas has decided to continue kicking the beehive until the bees give up and stop attacking them. My point is that I see both sides in the wrong here, regardless of history. Israel has created an environment where diplomacy will never work because Israel refuses to deal with Hamas (after creating an environment for them to thrive in), leaving violence and giving up as the only options left to Gaza. Conflict will be inevitable for as long as that keeps up. For Hamas, attacking Israel like this has proven why it's futile. All they've done is make Israel angry, and made the long term diplomatic situation worse.
  20. Yeah, I realized I could just use the strength charect for crafting. I am however having a lot of fun with my Crusader, who might become my primary character. I guess I'm just having more fun charging into a fight and being in the thick of it than I was shooting into the fight from afar.
  21. I want to thank everyone who sent us an application. We had a fantastic response to this drive in both volume and quality. It is my hope that I will be able to send out all the responses sometime between the next 24 and 48 hours. Everyone who applied will be hearing from me. We have more quality applications than we can accept, and the team is still debating, as of now, the final number of applicants we will take on, and who they should be.
  22. I was...displeased with the weapons (and armor) in ME2. To go from the overwhelming variety (even if there were only a handful of models with lots of reskins) of both to almost zero variety was a shock for me. I also dislike carrying heavy weapons around because they clip into your other back weapons and it seems sloppy to me to do that (in ME3, you can only find heavy weapons and have to use them or drop them, you can't carry them on your back anymore). There are also points to the plot that I don't like (broadly speaking, I dislike the 'hero is no longer trusted by their friends and allies' plot arc be it games, novels, or movies/TV shows. This is why I have never re watched a season of 24, and likely never will). That said, I do like the combat in ME2 more than ME3, and the final game adds the variety back into the game, on a more manageable scale, while keeping the combat system from the second game. Started playing Diablo III again and picked up the expansion. The only problem I still really have with this game is steep exponential progression that levels give you. I've been playing a bit with a clanmate from another game, but we can't play the charecters we started together on our own at all because if they become more than a couple levels off, the higher level is going to hilariously outclass the lower level in damage output. On the extreme end, my top charecter is currently a level 60 (10 paragon) wizard with a 1300 DPS weapon for around 53,000 actual DPS. His is a level 70 (192) wizard with a 2,300 DPS weapon and he does 950,000 damage per second. His massively higher paragon level and a weapon that is nearly twice as good as mine is obviously a large part of that, but I'd say a significant portion of that disparity is coming from the fact that his wizard has 10 levels on mine. I find it gives the game a very multiplayer hostile vibe if you are trying to play a charecter with someone else, and I actually had to make a Crusader that I could advance in single player because what I actually need is a strengh based charecter who can regularly find strength enhancing weapons to equip my wizards follower (the big downside to the new drop system). Of course, my Crusader has found maybe one non Crusader only shield in all of Act 1, so that's a problem (I need shields, amulets, and rings too), but I should be able to at least find something in a store. On the upside, both the Crusader and Barbarian are just hilarious and fun to play as. Leap and Whirlwind never cease to amuse me as a barbarian, and the Crusader for all his defensive focus is an absolute powerhous. Like, considering just bumping him up to nightmare for act 2 on his first run because he is just dominating, though not as badly as my Barbarian and my friends Monk in multiplayer, or the complete roflstomp that was the end of act 3 and all of act 4 with my wizard on Nightmare after finding the legendary madness wand (the one that laughs at you when you die and boosts disintigration by 25%). I killed the Act 3 final boss in maybe 20 seconds. I cleared all of act 4 in 40 minutes. It was a total slaughter.
  23. Over the last week or so I watched an LP of Rome: Total War. Looked like a pretty good game, being a bit lighter on the empire building which is probably good for me, and with a real time combat system which is a bonus for me, especially on such an epic scale. Thought I would get Rome II since Rome is a decade old, but after taking a peek at the reviews and then watching a couple on youtube, I convinced myself that I could both save $50 and get a superior game by going with the original. It's a brilliant game to play, though I think the combat is going to take some getting used to for me, since I've been abysmal in the two sieges I've fought so far. In the first one I heroically lost more people than the guys I defeated, and in the second I'm pretty sure I managed to kill my own general and faction leader (who I was using while waiting for my preferred general to recover from the last fight) with my own archers. In particular, I am doing a poor job of moving up anything that isn't my frontline, meaning that my reinforcements are often standing much further away than I would like. From what I've seen though, field battles are much easier (the guy I watched wasn't brilliant at sieges either). Unfortunately I am playing as the Scipii, and my incompetence has robbed me of my game plan. The idea was to take all the islands in the Mediterranean to give me free reign to move my troops by sea. I would then cross the sea into northern Africa and sweep west, then back north into Spanish territory up to the mountainous access to the rest of Europe, and ideally push east in Africa to Alexandria. During the civial war I would would be relying on naval power to defend the coastline, and I would wage most of my war from Europe where it would be easier to concentrate my forces, and use my naval power to place my armies on the coast and create another front. Now, if the Julii take all of Europe and conquor the spanish, I'd probably be unable to hold anything much to the west of Alexandria because Africa is simply too big and spread out, would create a substantially larger naval front for me to deal with. Looks to be a pretty promising campain, though I am hoping I fare better against the pontics than the guy I watched (that's where I got the idea to sweep around north. The Pontics totally stalled out his advance and ultimately I moved all his major forces out of Africa and moved them to aid his conquest of Europe.

We see a clear distinction between our staff expressing their personal opinion as a user, and criticizing site policy in public. Giving our staff as much freedom to post as members of the community as we reasonably can is important to this site. Yeah, notcied that yesterday. I have not seen Red vs Blue in a long time, and I haven't seen much of it. But I'm also watching Angel right now because I never got around to that after watching Buffy. I am so behind on my other Netflix shows too, but it's nice to not be wanting for shows to watch which does happen to me every couple months.
