  1. Well the Bible is God's word, and the major stuff he wants to get through gets through. And I'm pretty sure that at multiple points God either a) instructs people to help kill people, or b) helps people to kill people (i.e. Jericho).

You are thinking of god almost as a human. You will have trouble if you think of it that way.

Btw - Christians believe that God was human, for a brief period of time.

Hell, I believe god is everywhere and everyone. God was Jesus, but Jesus wasn't all of god.

  3. Religion gives people a set of beliefs to live by. Most people without religion also have certain beliefs or laws they live by. So religion isn't that big of a problem. In the end most of the problems just stem from some people thinking they are better than others because of their religion or lack of.

  4. Nihilism makes sense. Though, if you say nothing exists then you are already saying that "nothing" exists. Therefore at least "nothing" exists, even if it is of absolute no value or purpose. If matter and space came from nothing, then that nothing must of been at least... there is no proper word for it, it must of at least been somehow "aware" of itself. Then somehow out of itself manifestations formed and eventually our brains formed to perceive that "nothing" as something. Basically, everything is made out of "nothing", it just seems like something to the brain, which itself was formed out of nothing. Yea.. it might be tough to grasp :P

    That is Buddhism not Nihilism.

A Nihilist is closer to an athiest then a Buddhist.

    Buddhists are atheists...

Yes but it really comes down to how they live their life, a Buddhist would be dispassionate like a Jedi or something while an Atheist might still desire a permanent universe, system of government, etc.

I guess the main difference between the two is a Buddhist understands there is nothing and an atheist may say there isnt eternal life but may say something still is eternal.

A Nihilist may have a similar belief but how they live is closer to an atheist then a Buddhist

Ah yes, that's why I became attracted to certain teachings that can be considered Buddhist. More experiencing what I "believed", rather than just talking about it.

  6. But that doesn't necessarily mean they would use them against those who have no guns. There seems to be this perennial attitude that because someone is in a position to commit a crime against someone who is defenceless, and because they already are a criminal just for holding a gun illicitly, that they will commit the crime. Almost like, because they're a criminal, they will automatically commit crime regardless of context, as if Satan himself had possessed them.

You don't even need to look at the UK or Canada here - you can stay in the US. If the above were actually true, then those who choose not to possess guns would be being attacked by those who do already. Yet, although the homicide rate is higher in the US, you'd hardly say it's "out of control", not to the extent where you could reasonably say people must have guns to protect themselves. Therefore, the whole 'we need guns to protect ourselves from people who would gain guns through the black market' doesn't really bare out, and this viewpoint is reinforced by countries who ban gun ownership. I have never been attacked by, or even seen a real gun before, yet knowing the area I grew up in, I have no doubt I've been within ten metres of one.

Of course. But people want to ban guns, when its not really going to help anything.

  7.

Look at what happened during prohibition. Led to organized crime and violence, could still get it if you knew where to look, bootleggers, etc.

Yes, but it was still harder to get, and that was my point.

I'm not claiming that a blanket ban on all drugs is the best thing for society, what I am saying is that banning something (whatever the other effects may be) generally makes it harder to get.

Do you think all those negatives (organized crime and all) are a balanced trade off to restricting people's personal choices? Also lol this thread is pretty terrible at staying on track. From guns to nazis to drugs

I'm not even condoning banning alcohol

I'm just attempting to debunk the myth that a gun control would be ineffective.

But yes, I do support the ban on most drugs (excepting alcohol and maybe marijuana) because of the strain abuses of those drugs put on the healthcare system. Not so much of an argument for the states, but for a country with publicly funded healthcare it's quite a poignant one.

Pm me or create a new topic if you want to continue as we're getting OT.

    Solution to drugs:

    1. Get government to fund drug research for removal of harmful side effects of drugs and yet increase that 'high' feeling.

    2. Legalize drugs and make public areas available to enjoy drug usage.

    3. ???

    4. Profit.

On-topic: Most of the violence that occurs because of gun violence is done by people who either get guns illegally or wouldn't mind having to get them illegally. I have no stats to back this up, it is just how it seems to me. So maybe less people would own guns if they were banned, but for the most part the criminals who acutally use them would still obtain them.

  8. Hey, if someone can find away to completely eliminate guns and gun trade from the U.S then I'm all for it. That's not going to happen though...

When society gets too used to gun ownership, trying to take them away will only lead to a black market for guns. Black markets are never good

Exactly my point. Like drugs... making them illegal doesn't exactly help.

  10. Another person on rsof going for 200m everything

    Quick find code: 154-155-457-62178846

States that he doesnt care about efficiency so probably won't be in the running for first to 200m everything (seems to be doing things in the most stupid order imaginable for a 200m everything goal), especially as he is currently level 1 in several stats. To be honest this seems like a pipe dream but he IS in the top page agility and going up ranks reasonably fast in that so does have some dedication.

He has barely begun to play the game yet.... Unless he has another account that actually has somewhat decent levels in all skills he doesn't know what he's in for.

Yeah, he's doing agility first then RC, not the best idea!

In other news a guy that used to go to my elementary and high school just maxed his skill total

Why isn't that the best idea? 99 Agility helps with RC so you don't run out of energy, whereas RC doesn't help agility.

On your other news, do we care? L. Wow, you know someone in real life that's maxed.. big deal?

We don't care that you don't care :D

  11. Interestingly, there's an article about Blue Valentine on the BBC website about how America seems to censor sex much more than it does violent scenes.

I agree. My friend was not allowed to turn in his short-story that referenced oral sex, while many people turned in stories that included murders. Also people tend to think of movies that have sex scenes and references to be much more "inappropriate" to children than movies that have murder scenes and violence through out. So basically, through the media, society is sending the message of "Killing isn't that bad, but sex is" to kids.

  12. Guns don't kill people. People kill people.

Exactly. Most people in gangs who have guns get them illegally anyway. So you pass a law that makes them illegal, they'll still get them. Nothing much will change... The problem isn't that guns are available, it's that people want them in the first place.

  13. You've been to the U.S. before, haven't you? If not, what do you think so far? (And even if you have been here before, what'd you think of this trip? :o)

[spoiler=I hate school.]Debating with myself whether I should take

Accounting and Business Statistics this semester (both sophomore classes and I'm a freshman; advisor thinks I'm not ready for both, just one or the other) and Intro to Psych over the summer

    or

Accounting and Intro to Psych this semester (more doable) and Business Statistics either over the summer or next year.

Just changed my schedule to the first option and I don't think I can make it but I'm gonna prove myself wrong. I wanna take both Accounting and Business Statistics this semester so I can get them over with asap, but oh my [bleep]ing god I hope I'm not killing myself.

The advisor I spoke with has 10+ years of advising experience and she advised the 2nd option.

But then that would mean I'd have to take Business Statistics next year, which would mean all my friends will be taking Immersion Core Fall 2011 and I'll be doing it Spring 2012... WTH.

Either get good grades, or get [cabbage] done and risk getting OK grades and being able to have more freedom...

[cabbage]! WHAT AM I DOING. I'm scared.

Relax. It will all be good :)

  14. @ Drumgun,

If you're so sick then making yourself sleep only 5 hours a day will only make your life worst. You should sleep for 8 hours and play for 16 if that's all you can do. Unless you're trying to not get better in order to continue this lifestyle?

Some people can sleep for 5 hours a day and still be fine, it depends on the person.

for a few days you can be fine sleeping 5 hours a day. For weeks/months? not exactly healthy and your body won't function as well as if you slept 7-8+ hrs.

    Again, depends on person. http://www.medindia.net/news/Scientists-Identify-Why-Some-People-Sleep-Less-Than-Others-58295-1.htm
