Sure, he could try that first.. but it could be x of the bearings that have been broken in the pedal chassis. which is making the cracking noise, it happened to me after an event, it was incredibly muddy and wet, so it was required to put more force on the pedals, which strains the crank system due to mud on the chain, the bearings couldn't handle the pressure and they simply cracked.

Could also just be grit, grass, mud etc.. in the crank chamber.

Take apart your chain, gear and chain system. Clean it out with hot soapy water, lube it up afterwards, then replace, check all the nuts, bolts, screws are tightened as much as you can. Only do this if you're confident, 'cause if you replace it wrong, you can noo naw, it even more.
