Why is it wise-cracking? It's a perfectly logical thing to do, why move when you shouldn't have to? Saves walk-power. Politicians are not celebrities when they are in office or running for it, they're politicians. You might as well change this to "Favorite sports star" or something. A celebrity is someone who is widely recognizable and gets a lot of attention, so, yes, I would say politicians fit into that category. Celebrity is not a mutually exclusive term.
