I'm on a maple & birch ply board, with 4 wheels. Getting that speed using only your foot to get to that speed is harder than you think.

You don't necessarily have to buy slide gloves (though having some form of hand protection is prudent). People with any respect don't really care what you look like, at least you are protected. If this is anything to go by: I actually forgot I was wearing them :P
