I would rather work with a number I can understand, so that I can actually make stuff for it too. A cost of operation for something that does not have a generator of its own is a useless number and an annoyance and hindrance for the gamer, as there's nothing to base alternatives on, I have no idea wether it needs simply a solar panel and a large battery or a helios plant and a supercapacitor.

And 90 years of research is just as bad as 100, I remember being bored of waiting for ZPMs already before 80.

No, excel is what you use instead of a calculator. It makes math with variables and constants easy. And no one said anything about doing it at the same time as something else. You could do it between sessions or not at all, but if I can calculate the correct number, then you should at least be able to make a rough estimate that you think fits into your game, afterall, some things require a non-multipourpose unit to be understood. The word potato would even have made more sense than the reply you gave when I asked for the neccessary charge to power the gate, since that could be interprated as a potato battery being enough.

Archi, that was what I was proposing, except I had a system for figguring out how to decide what spending less/going faster would require. And I noticed a poor sub a minute ago while correcting the names of my Pokémon episodes in season 5. The episode is the Ice Cave (obviously, since that was the only banned episode in season 5):

Technically I was only a weapon, since neither my concious nor subconcious mind performed the action.

I just realized that even though Earth was killed by me, I still have not killed any sentient being. God bless those nanites.

How about using a standard where lvl one reserarch is 1 million + 1 year, lvl 2 research is 2 million + 2 years or 1 million + 4 years or 4 million and 1 year. Basically it needs to take both time and money, but you can gain the same effect by altering the amount, but if one is halved, then the other must be doubled, leading to it actually costing 150% of the original price. If one is divided by three then the other must be multiplied be three, resulting in 166% of the original price. And if one value is divided by ten then the other is multiplied by ten, resulting in 505% of the original price and so on. Then the price growth can be either linear or exponential. Starting tech level can be decided by how advanced the tech is.

Lasers usually use only a specific power and as such don't compensate. I've done that, it's not hard. It took me ten minutes and maybe 500 keystrokes in excel. I never asked any such questions, only "how much time would x nanites take to eat an army of y soldiers?".

First off, power input and power output are constant for a laser as long as no part of it is changed, blooming only reduces the focus of the light before it hits the target. Second, I have only suguested one TV tech, stargates, for which the only arguements was for you to state the power requirements in an understandable manner. Third, I asked you to estimate time, going only by quantities, you established the required time. Retech, Archi already requires scientific knowledge of us. Well, that, math skills and/or good structure of thinking.

If it takes me next to no time to work out a plausible course of action and a viable arguement for it, how could it take hours to understand them? The most complex term I've used is blooming, but that wasn't even in any game. "Laser beams begin to cause plasma breakdown in the air at energy densities of around a megajoule per cubic centimeter. This effect, called "blooming," causes the laser to defocus and disperse energy into the atmosphere. Blooming can be more severe if there is fog, smoke, or dust in the air."

A good rule is to stay away from all fish with weapons, fin spines like those on perches don't count. Also, be thorough when gutting them, and look out for signs of decay. And suicide in an apocalyptic setting would be easier.

Fixed. Nex, she's flaming, I'm ranting, there's a big difference. I say what she is doing wrong, she just calls me [developmentally delayed].

Asuming you spend more than three hours fishing, I'd say the probabillity of catching at least one fish is >88%, with around 75% chance of catching multiple fish. Using a strong line (35-50kg strenght) you would avoid having it break unless you cut it (pulling too hard would likely only make you fall overboard). And using lures means you won't loose any unless you cut the line. Also you could use multiple rods/lures, I once caught two fish at once, one fell for the lure, the other was pierced on the hook through the tail.

Nex, that's abusing your powers, since her being ignorant is a fact, not an opinion. She disregards almost any fact that has not been uncovered as a direct result of her actions, often repeating actions that other have done and failed and disregarding logic at times.

Oh, and Lee, if we were to have the SI run a scan of the logs, they'd likely show you to be the most ignorant player up to this date, and I'm pretty sure you won't lose that title in a long time, if ever. Don't listen to Mather, you're doing fine. :P - Nex

Archi, fishing is that easy, while you can't expect to get a fish every tenth minute, you will get at least one fish a day (likely much more), assuming you remember bait or lures. And one fish is sufficient to keep you alive for more than one day. But you've got quite a few other problems to worry about, fish often contain parasites, some of which will take all the nutrients you consume if you eat it.

How is that better? You just multiplied the required free computing power by 500.

Well, 2mm³ is equivalent to 200000μm³ or 20,000,000,000nm³, which means there are 20 billion nanites in me, or at least there were, though that seems much, there are 2.5-5 times as many neurons in my brain as there are nanites in my body. Which means that BOnSI is capable of calculations far beyond the range of what one would assume a futuristic supercomputer could do. With the avarage nevron having 7,000 neural pathways and giving off a signal up to 70HZ, that must mean BOnSI has a free capacity of up to 245 quadrillion operations per second, or 245petaFLOPS. That's equivalent to the total of the world's 500 fastest computers times 7.5, in spare computing power. Well, either that or the software of the nanites themselves is made of pure awesome.

Also we have nanites that are not only able to fix people up, but also control them even when sparse.
