They would only be used if you were wearing chainmail armour. Even then a gun would be better We went through this, if you are fighting more than 2 zombies per person, you use a gun, otherwise, a melee weapon is efficient enough. Extra rations for an awesome looking kill. Waste of bullets for an un-needed kill.

Ponycorn is basically hyper-bunyip, use it anywhere that bunyip cannot quite keep up.

Want to be uber pro? Get two of them... Its not too difficult, it just takes so freaking long. Assuming you have 10 espers and the Mindflayer hunt finished, go to Henne mines phase 2 dig, and theres a 10% chance of a chest spawning there. Once the chest has spawned, there is 10% chance of it yeilding a zodiac spear. Should take you about 1000 tries. I got mine on 768....Ugh. Also, make sure you wear a diamond armlet.

Too much power consumption, plus we will need training just to learn how to fire the thing and to aim correctly. I do believe at long distances the projectile has a 1+ minute flight time, so we will need to factor in everything. It's just ineffective with a limited power supply (especially if we have to generate our own electricity. Otherwise I would have posted it ages ago when my friend was talking about the one he was building. Oh I know its not practical. I just think its pretty awsome, is all. On a totally random note, I found the ultimate zombie overkill weapon.
