Despaxes by what your saying using the layers feature would also make an image "not a true pixel" which is a load of bull. As long as its done pixel by pixel, no one gives a damn.

Yes you have to create a psd file if you want to go back and edit the image, plus whatever other file type you want the actual image to be (png, jpg etc)

First: Looks ok but needs a border. Second: Seems to be far too much bevel going on. I can't read the text at all. If I were you I would just keep the text nice and simple but slightly see through.
