  1. You talk about women who have regretted their abortion. This is a nine year old child who has become pregnant through rape. Having a baby, through c-section or otherwise, at that age would be permanently physically and psychologically damaging. Yes, the unborn child was innocent, but we have to judge which is more important; the wellbeing of the unborn child or the 9 year old who has barely started her life? I would stress the latter. I am in disbelief that you think it is ok for a 9 year old to give birth to a child conceived as a result of rape. This is somewhat off topic, I know.
  2. Are you saying that a raped child should have to keep the baby? That is sickening. They are not mentally nor physically ready to have a baby regardless of if they keep it.
  3. To me that concept shows money being pushed over to the Church instead of towards scientific advancement, or if not that things like healthcare. They are great, sure.
  4. A friend got a message from his ISP (virgin) telling him to cut down on his 'unlimited' usage, that was from hosting a minecraft server. They can take up a lot of traffic with 5+ people online. What's your ISP by the way? You could always consider changing/upgrading.
  5. au contraire, pointing out glaring flaws in arguements is essential to constructive arguments, and the most fundamental of flaws is not being able to back the arguement up with proof. You're completely missing the point. His point was not that you can prove baptism is an inherently good thing. His point was that in the catholic church baptism is considered to be a good thing, because according to catholic doctrine, it is important for heaven. Thus answering that point by saying "but heaven doesn't exist" is a straw man. It's not directly responding to the point he was making, granted, but it was an advancement of the debate and I guess that can be viewed as a straw man. However the fact that the existence of the basis for baptism (according to him) is dubious, it's a valid point to make.
  6. Saying that, do you believe that your deity is the only deity? What purpose do they serve then in your opinion? They are all about how your God created the world in 7 days, after all. Wait, what? Point 1, you said anyone could get into heaven, even if they weren't a Christian. Also your entire point here relies on heaven actually existing. Point 2. That statement carries as much weight as me saying 'the only way you will be reborn after death is if you were dunked underwater as a baby'. I do agree with Obsfucator with the whole being baptized as a baby thing though. I am struggling to see how religion is in your life Duff. You follow all of the morals, but the religion part of it is believing that a deity gave it to us? I follow pretty much identical morals with no deity.

That doesn't change the fact that from a technical perspective, the macbooks aren't a very good design at all. I take touch-typing for granted, can't believe some people who can afford a thousand-dollar laptop can't learn just by using the computer so much and need a backlit keyboard >.< (not really related, but eh)
  8. Evolution created what we are today, that is science not a belief.
  9. Surely everyone, as you said, have these morals, and so Catholicism is just.. thanking your deity for giving them to us? They came to us with the power of rational thinking, which evolved in the process of evolution.
  10. Catholics support a variety of interpretations of the Bible. They reject that every single word should be interpreted literally. The difference is that interpretations of the Bible must ultimately be used for the above. The Bible is God revealed for the purpose of salvation, available to all (universal salvific will). The conclusions of some interpretations that are contradictory to other Church doctrine (for the Church is made up of both Scripture and Tradition) and that really, if enacted and carried out, would do no good to society, such as that it is correct to stone a woman who has committed adultery, are not supported. Basically, the Church supports all types of interpretation (be it liberation theology, feminist theology, etc); however, the Church may not agree with certain the conclusions made from said interpretations. Make sense? So it is morals presented through the figure of a deity? I'm all for the morality part of it, I personally don't find the deity part of it all very necessary.
  11. They sound identical, apart from whenever something you believe is contradicted by science you cease to believe it, while Fundies don't. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
  12. What would you say are the differences between those fundamentalist Christians and Catholicism are? I'm talking about the belief things, not moral/helping people. In other words, why Catholicism?
  13. For me, a belief in something that we have no more than 0 solid proof in, and indeed "having faith in the unknown" is an archaic medieval thing that has been holding up science (read: facts) throughout most of history, and some would argue continues to do so today (although I'm not sure how true this is). I see how some people may turn to the idea of a heaven to deal with grief when someone dies, but this is during a time of irrationality. In general I see no logic whatsoever in believing in any book, whether it be the Bible or any other holy scripture. If I get proof I'd gladly accept the existence of a deity/deities (it wouldn't be believing any longer), but until then I'll stay as I am :). I'd be interested to hear a theists thoughts on the topic. This is true, many threads of this nature end up the same way.

If you're mucking around with things and you have no idea what they do (and you have to search pretty deep to get to stuff that common sense can't figure out) then you really deserve to break your installation.
  15. I'm happy with easing up on that in some of the less active forums. But to be fair, I don't think that has happened in the Tech & Computers forum in months :P I think it's nice having the sticky there in case people want to use it, because some people just won't post their own thread for that kind of thing. But if someone were to post outside the sticky like right now, I wouldn't mind. If there are any other forums where you feel this is an issue feel free to let me know :) If I wanted to post pics of a small thing I'd done to my build, like install a SSD, I don't think that would warrant an entire thread, even on a not-so-active forum, so that sticky is good.

Windows 7 really isn't hard to use.
  17. If you want surround sound, the best thing to have 5/7 actual speakers and a bass unit - headphones may recognise some forms of surround sound but aren't as good as true surround sound. I don't have any experience with headphones really and surround sound, but I can't imagine it would do a whole lot, let alone $60 worth.

Hey, I wouldn't mind them if they weren't so overpriced, and I can't consciously recommend something to someone who doesn't totally understand what they're talking about and have them pay more than they need to. By all means, get one, but understand, as I said before, that you can get the equivilant for much much cheaper, just without the nice logo. Price isn't everything to some people, correct, but I would hope that given the opportunity most people would opt to save 1/4 of what they're paying. Mac's are more technophobe-proof and don't allow you to do as much as windows OS does, so you can't as easily go and delete System32.

Why not ask her if she has any preferences? I can't personally justify the expense of a mac, but if you can then by all means go ahead, so long as you know that there are definitely 'pc' equivilants. Yeah, if you bought a gaming computer it should be compatible with power overseas, so long as the voltage is the same and/or it has a voltage switch on the PSU (applies to desktops only). If it is a desktop by the way, don't buy a prebuilt - make one.

Could you expand on that, please? Genuinely curious. I'm not sure how he meant it, but I would say that most people who take the time to give feedback on products are the ones who have some complaint about it, however minor. That's not to say all reviews are from people with problems, but the majority are really for most products.
  21. One of the irritating things I find is that when translating things from French or Latin into English, one word is translated into many words of English. Of course, this is the only real way to translate it, but I like it how in French/Latin that one word can mean so many things (Latin especially, what with the word endings). It's almost like.. in my head I know what it's saying, but if I think in English rather than 'thoughts' it still translates into many words. I dunno if that makes much sense :P
  22. I'm impressed with the build. This is all that I would personally change: Case Optical Drive I'd agree about the optical drive, but the case is sterling for the price. If you're willing to cough up some more for the 912, go ahead it's a great series - I have the HAF X and love it. It's up to OP on price really, both are good.

Yeah, this is true. If you want cheaper prices, it's probably better to order online - they are generally cheaper than brick & mortar shops. Your installation fills with random files and downloads because you download them ;). I'm running a 2 year installation with 10 days uptime and it's smooth as ever. That argument about updates is dubious - they are more frequent and more similar to service packs, in a sort of middle ground. Yep, Apple have a great marketing team that target people pretty similar to you :)
  24. My 2 cents: Part list permalink / Part price breakdown by merchant CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($109.99 @ Amazon) Motherboard: MSI 870-G45 ATX AM3 Motherboard ($71.99 @ Amazon) Memory: G.Skill NS 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($25.99 @ Newegg) Hard Drive: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($49.99 @ Newegg) Case: NZXT Gamma Classic (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case ($35.99 @ Amazon) Power Supply: Antec 430W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($54.99 @ Amazon) Optical Drive: Lite-On iHDS118-04 DVD/CD Drive ($24.97 @ Newegg) Total: $373.91 (Prices include shipping and discounts when available.) (Generated 2011-09-20 17:21 EDT-0400) Add your current graphics card. Some stuff on that list is inaccurate, ie. with a mail in rebate the CPU is cheaper at newegg, but that specific offer ends tomorrow 21/9. It's not worth buying a new graphics card with a $400 budget, if you bump that up to $500 though it's a totally different story. Bare in mind that this is something that can be done later - you can use your current one now and then buy a new one when you get an extra ~$100.
  25. Are you running 3way SLI with 590s or something?
