  1. As far as I understand it, this FAQ page hasn't been updated in several years. This turn of events only happened recently, but why is everyone so quick to ignore the fine print of their contract that they implicitly signed with Jagex? (And yes, you did sign a contract with them when you created an account with them.) I'm sorry Makoto, but you misunderstand what a browser like SS is. It absolutely doesn't "reverse-engineer, decompile or modify the Game client software." It is not "a modified/customised version of the client software." It does not "create or provide any other means by which the Game may be played by others" and it is not "replacement or modified client/server software" or "server emulator" software. It accesses the game exactly the same way as any other browser like IE or Firefox does. That is why it has been legal all along. The "grey" areas had to do advertising and adding unfair advantages. While the software itself did not disable advertising, it did allow the user to do so themselves which breaks the rules. So, even though the software didn't break the rules, it "encouraged" users to do so. It is arguable whether the "world switcher" feature gave users an unfair advantage. The creator of SS always argued that it didn't because you couldn't use the software to switch worlds faster (in crowded world situations, it is actually slower). But, it did keep you from having to get carpal tunnel syndrome from repeated clicking on the full world. This can be argued as giving an advantage because many players would not bother to try to get into the world if they had to continuously click over and over again. And also, if you couldn't get into the new world, you weren't logged out of the old one, so you wouldn't have to log back into it. That could also be considered an advantage. But, by bookmarking the world in IE, you get the same advantages, so this is all very debatable. The fair trade laws of most countries (and internationally) abhor companies restricting third parties from creating products based on their existing product. It's a way of trying to "corner the market." This would be like GM saying that you can only use GM air cleaners in their cars. Lexmark lost in court when they tried to void people's warranties for using third party toner cartridges. I think Jagex comes very close to committing the same error when they try to say which browser can or can't be used with their product. But, the "newest" version of Rule 7 brings them back into better compliance with the intent of widely recognized fair trade laws, in my humble opinion.
  2. It's nice to see Jagex backing down a bit. They are allowing Strider to make some modifications to SS and will then allow it again. They also lifted my 10 day mute by a mod today, after only 1 day. I don't think they knew how bad their simple "rule change" would go over with customers. Thanks, Jagex, for listening. EDIT: P.S. These are the newest guidelines regarding third party browsers and clients from the Runescape Knowledge Base: Third party client authors' guidelines This page is intended to give advice to authors of third party clients. Players should still be aware that we do not endorse or recommend the use of such software. This page does not describe a new rule. This does not add anything not already implied by our fifteen main rules, so unless you are trying to write a third party client that can be used within our rules, or trying to determine if a particular client is allowed for use, you probably do not need to read it. Nor does this aim to prohibit what you can or cannot create. Rather, it gives you advice on how to make software which is not prohibited for use by our players under Rule 7. This may be of interest if you wish to a) not endanger other peoples' accounts, B) ensure the maximum possible audience for your program, as many users will be put off using your software if to do so they have to break a rule themselves and risk being banned. Some things to bear in mind: When viewing a free world on a computer display with a resolution higher than 800 x 600, the game pane should default to at least 630 pixels high, and must not be able to scroll vertically. I.e. the game pane must be displayed in such a way that both the game and advert are fully visible at the same time (otherwise it encourages users to break Rule 15). The program should not allow worlds marked as 'FULL' on the world select page to be selected (otherwise it encourages users to break Rule 7 - unfair advantage). If the program has its own integrated chat feature separate from the RuneScape chat, it should make it very clear to users that this chat is not part of RuneScape and is not official, endorsed or moderated by Jagex in any way. Furthermore, this chat should still be moderated (just not by us), and the moderators should not allow chat which infringes our rules of conduct. All the rules are important, but in particular if Rule 3 or Rule 9 are regularly breached on the external chat, the program will be considered to endanger users or encourage rule breaking. To avoid confusion with the official RuneScape chat, moderators of the external chat should not be indicated with a silver or gold crown. If the chat is IRC based, then the program should only allow access to IRC channels which conform with the above. The program should not contain adverts or links to websites which encourage rule breaking or endanger users. We may update this list from time to time to keep it current, hence this is not intended to be an exhaustive list, simply some things to think about. In general, for the program to be allowed for users to use under Rule 7, it must not do anything which encourages rules breaking or endangers users.
  3. There is no advantage in using SS. Players are upset because the game was more convenient to play. For example, I like to be able to hold my mouse over a skill display and see how much XP I need to get to the next level while I'm training. This is convenient so I don't have fo figure it in my head from the in-game display by subtracting my current XP from the Xp for the next level or typing it into a calculator. Convenience is all. It doesn't help me one bit to get to level 99 in that skill. Same with IRC chat. Sure, you can open two windows and resize them to display properly on the page everytime you start to play RS. But, it is much more convenient to just open one window and begin playing. No advantage whatsoever. I have finally determined that those opposed to others using third party clients just think that others might be enjoying the game more than them and are jealous. That's the only thing that could explain their position and the false things they are saying. EDIT: P.S. I have taken to loading SS and resizing my IE window so that it fits above the skill display. That way I can still hover over them while I'm playing and check my stats. I can't check other's hiscores though, or use IRC without the SS window covering my game window.
  4. You are probably right, now that I think about it. I imagine it will be just as good as their wonderful proprietary forum software. Now that was re-inventing the wheel.
  5. Careful now; that's libel. They never said they were considering IRC... Believe me, if they add group chat, it will be IRC. They may give it a cleaner front end to make it more user friendly, but the backend will be IRC without a doubt. Why in God's name would they go to the incredible expense of re-inventing the wheel? EDIT: Unless you think they're going to try to give clans a five line chat box?
  6. But I do know what I'm talking about. How is SwiftSwitch a browser? Even in the FAQ for it, it uses this statement: (1) Decided to bold the parts of that statement that you may or may not have noticed. It is similar to one, but that doesn't mean it IS one. For instance, an optical mouse is similar to a touchpad in the sense that they are both pointer devices on a computer, but that doesn't make an optical mouse a touchpad, or vice versa. Furthermore, simply stating that a need that was not provided by Jagex does not give anyone, individual or company besides Jagex themselves, to step in and fill that need. If Jagex wanted you to have an IRC client embedded in their client, then they'd have provided it. They haven't? Guess they must not trust IRC security... (1) - Referenced to the FAQ of this client A browser is software that is used to access information on the internet. SS is a browser by definition. As a matter of fact, it allows you to access any website, not just Runescape. Nobody has imbedded an IRC client in Jagex's client. Some have provided an IRC client in there browsers. And you know nothing if you think that having IRC chat running on the same page as Runescape is a security risk for Jagex or any player other than the one who has access to it to type his password in. If that were the case, why would Jagex say they are considering adding it themselves? I just wish they would have done so before they ditched the others.
  7. I call every five seconds faster than pressing F5. Especially when you really can't press F5; you have to wait on that empty 20 users to appear in server 2 with the arrow refresh trick. If you blink or sneeze and accidentally press that button, it'll be gone for a half hour. Even then it'll take you another half hour to get in. On top of this, people seem to fail to realise that Jagex has had the "no third party" rule in effect for quite some time. Why is this just now coming to everyone as a shock? You can debate with me that it was legal and all this stuff, even show me the screenshots of the maker asking Customer Support. I've seen that, and even then didn't believe that it could be legal; after all it was still third party. You can even argue on the premise that all it did (or all that you used it for) was the switch feature. It is still third party. You can even dare to argue that you used it just for the IRC. If you wanted to, you could just download mIRC separately (in fact I've recommended that to a number of people in my IRC channel), and you would be within legality. But if you didn't, it would still be a third party client with a feature that was obviously not intended to be within the original RuneScape client. You can even debate with me that it did not give you an advantage. Oh sure, you may not call having guides, calculators and an IRC client open in the exact same window an advantage...but I sure do. Right now, what matters is what the rules say right now. Arguing semantics about the past is both pointless and a waste of time. Jagex's policies are subject to change (without notice), so you can either live with it or stop playing quietly. (By quietly I mean people that say "Jagex is going to lose money over this!"; say that and I'd buy 6 months of membership to make up for your loss.) You should really know what you talking about before you go off. All browsers - SS (yes, it is a browser), IE, Firefox, etc, etc, are "third party" from Jagex's position. What they have disallowed is browsers that add "Runescape specific features." These "features" are things like having IRC on same page, links to fansites (like Tip.it) on the same page, hiscores on the same page, world switching on the same page, and calculators and guides on the same page. These are all things Jagex could (and should) provide. But since they have decided that our five bucks a month doesn't warrant it, they haven't. So others stepped in and filled the void. I really don't like having them tell me which browsers I can and can't use on my own computer. And it starts a strange idea that companies can tell me which browser I can or can't use to access there websites or product. It's no different than telling me I have to use IE and not Firefox. EDIT: P.S. Are you really suggesting that not having a screwed up interface to the game is an advantage? Is Jagex's screwed up interface part of the game play?
  8. Mods, if morons are going to try to defame the character of Strider in this thread, it should be locked!! That is way off base! He is one of the finest people I've come across on the internet - patient, forthright, and honest as the day is long. That type of talk, directed at an individual, is completely out of line. All he's done is create (and maintain) a beautiful browser to help people enjoy playing a game. And all for very little (if any) reward. Sheesh!
  9. I was dubious of this, too...until yesterday. I guy pulled this on me and a couple of other crafters and we ran around there for about 4-5 seconds looking for the mage. He didn't attack anyone, but that 4-5 second delay with the added confusion could have been the start of something deadly. I thought you might want to know. This is a very useful guide. Thanks for posting it.
  10. If I follow what your saying right...that is terrible advice. You wait for the ore to respawn? I could understand that if you were doing high alchemy or something but if your mining for profit, 100% of rune miners switch worlds to find spawns. You dont want to wear a full prayer set because the boots, gloves, and capes dont give high enough prayer bonuses to make a difference. The more items you were on you the less ores you can carry each trip. Great guide. Thanks for sharing your secret. By keeping a scratch pad with respawn times, I can mine 100 ores at Heroes in about 4 hrs. The second 100 would take less time since I've already found the spawns, but I've never been able to take the concentration needed for longer than that. :P This method seems like it would be a whole lot less stressful, unless of course it also becomes packed with miners. One thing I don't understand. Why does wearing more prayer armor (and carrying a d mace, for example) mean less ores? Is there a weight limit in RS that I'm not aware of? If so, what is it? Thanks again for the great advice. I'll be trying it myself with teletabs.
  11. If I'm wearing my QP cape, I don't mind showing the emote. But it can get annoying, so I just take it off and wear somethings else sometimes if I'm training hard.
  12. Suggestion: Always keep herblore as your lowest skill and add "Tears of Guthix' each week. Currently, I always use the genie lamps on herblore, too.
  13. Thanks for the recognition, Dork. Looks good, except the green dot is yellow on my map. Acrotis - My suggestion (Dork would know better, though) would be absolutely to use the pyramid. It is faster than any other method even at the lower levels. I started using it somewhere in the high 40s, but I had already done the Elid quest which makes a big difference when banking in Nardah. It's not required, though. You don't even need to use prayer, but you can make more trips through the pyramid if you do. You'll probably want to hold onto some of the rock flavored loot (especially statuettes) since you won't be getting as much gold. You can balance how much cash you want to get from loot with how much experience you want to get by taking more supplies and dropping much of the earlier finds. Dork's method of just checking for snakes is great. It's fast and much less risk of poison. You should easily be able to check all the urns in the last two rooms at first, since your only entering three rooms, then check the urns for loot in the last room until your time runs out or you run out of urns. Good luck.
  14. Thank you, Dork. I'm glad you like my method. It seems much faster (and cheaper) to me than carpet rides. One last thing, since I don't take any teles with me to save room for loot, it's a good idea to save one dose of antipoison for after your last trip through the pyramid before you head out into the desert. I'm usually pretty low on hp at that point. :P I could also take an extra antipoison and more food to stay longer if I was willing to drop more loot. The XP would certainly be even faster. Or a tele for emergencies, I guess. By the way, it was rude of me to forget to comment on your guide. It is excellent. Thank you for posting it.
  15. The only thing I worry about when running the abyss is mages. Since IÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢m only combat 88, it is unlikely (donÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t flame me ÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ I didnÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t say impossible) that anybody but mages could take me out before I can get away. So, I wear full black dragon with archer helm, snakeskin boots, legends cape, a power ammy (balanced defense and range and cheaper than a glory if I lose it), and ring of life. I carry a magic short (with special set) and 50 p++ rune arrows that I donÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t use for anything else. In inventory, I have one slot with house teletabs, three pouches, and the rest of my esse. If I die and lose most of it, itÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s not the end of the world. Loosing the pouches would be a drag, though. Anyway, after crafting, I tele to my house, pray (my alter is right near the teleporter), and use the wall glory (beside door to alter) to tele to Edgeville. I bank to restock esse (and eat if needed), then run to the Zammy mage with my ÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬Åprotect from magicÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ
  16. I just use home tele. Saves rings and lets you recharge prayer in lumby. Thanks, confused. Yeh, I could just recharge prayer at my house, but I was thinking how fast it would be not to tele to house, then to bank, then back back to pyramid. But the small amout of time saved from the house tele is probably not worth it.
  17. If you donÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t have a scepter (which I just canÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t seem to get, even checking both sources in each room), there is another method I use very effectively. There is a bank in Nardah, and the Agility pyramid (where you sell the loot) is on the way there. Starting at the bank, I have full energy with 1 waterskin, 1 bucket (optional), 2 anti-poisons (4 dose), and 16 tunas in inventory. I wear black dragon body and legs, spottier cape, lightness boots, defense amulet, ring of wealth (donÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t know if it helps, but IÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢m trying to get a scepter) and gloves from CullinomancerÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s chest. If youÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ve done the ÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬ÅSpirits of the ElidÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ
  18. I went through about 6 weeks where my take was absolutely horrible, all around 40-60 tears (the lowest was 31!). But, the last two weeks have been fine, actually better than fine. 127 and 134 tears. I was wearing my quest cape on the last one (134). It's random variance is all. The random number algorithms used by Jagex do seem to contain "biorythms," though--they seem to range higher for a while then lower for a while, rather than jumping all over. I've noticed this with other randomly generated things too, like hits.
  19. I completed all the quests at level 87 (I'm 88 now). The only one I died on was Haunted Mine. I went with about five friends and took their advice of rull rune, prayer pots, and some lobs. Wrong. Protection prayers don't work, LOL. None of us beat him and two of us died. Went back in black with MSB and monkfish and ranged him to death with steel arrows. It wasn't too bad the second time cause I didn't have to follow him around through all the junk as much while ranging. I did have to telly out of the Underground Pass (stupid traps) and Monkey Madness (dang jailer), even though I didn't die. Mourning's End Prt 2 and Recipe for Disaster were really long, but not really that tough.
  20. Alright, I figured out what is going on now. My table works fine, too. You must get your first watch and sextant from Kojo and Murphy, or the option to make them doesn't show up. Talking with the professor is not enough. The crafting table is only useful to make additional watches and sextants (if you lose or drop the original ones). This was not clear to me from reading the guides. Most people would have probably already done this, but I was F2P for a long time so my levels are fairly high for getting my first coordinate clue. :? Thank you for your help, guys.
  21. The Treasure Trails, Construction, and Crafting guides all say that you can craft your own Watch and Sextant. This is a quote from the Treasure Trails guide (emphasis added): "To get the watch go to the Clocktower (located South of Ardougne). Speak with brother Kojo and ask him for the watch. If you own your own home and have a workshop, you can also make your own watch if you have level 28 crafting. Refer to our Construction and Crafting Guides for more information on owning a home and making your own watch. To get the sextant go to the Khazard Docks (located Northeast of Yanille). Speak with Murphy and ask him for the sextant. If you own your own home and have a workshop, you can also make your own sextant if you have level 23 crafting. Refer to our Construction and Crafting Guides for more information on owning a home and making your own sextant." Anybody know how to do this? I have the highest crafting table available and level 74 crafting and they are not offered.
  22. F2p combat 79 - total level 1030. Not that high yet, but I've been playing less than a year and I have a life. Well, sort of. Hee Hee. Peace and Love, Spheric1
