Psh, Photoshop > Paint.net :) Stroke = Line around text. Photoshop has a feature so you can change the layer options like inner glows and shadows.

Check a colour wheel and look at contrasting colours (colours opposite), use them or try some text effects. Experiment with drop shadows, inner glows, strokes. FYI, animation for banners can be off-putting since they can take long to load and can irritate by too much eye-catchyness.

You'll be able to do some abstracts but I really doubt you will be able to make abstracts like people do with PS. :|
